The Maps team builds the shared geospatial platform that powers vehicles, routes, sites, assets, and safety workflows. We source, ingest, enrich, and serve map data that product teams depend on daily. As Staff Software Engineer, you'll set technical direction for this platform, working across the geospatial stack: data ingestion pipelines, map data modeling and serving, map matching and routing, and spatial APIs. This is a small team with broad ownership—the systems you build become foundational infrastructure across Samsara. **Remote, US-based** **You Might Be a Good Fit If:** • You enjoy iterating with internal and external customers to build software platforms • You care about impact—our software keeps grocery shelves stocked, lights on, and workers safe • You work with urgency and think through best solutions for opportunities and scale • You collaborate well and move faster together **In This Role, You'll:** • Shape technical direction of the Maps teams • Build geospatial systems supporting foundational features across products • Scale offerings for real-time storage, query, and computational load • Consolidate team-specific solutions into scalable platform offerings • Build agentic solutions for customer self-service • Raise technical bar through code reviews, design discussions, and mentorship • Partner with leadership on strategic bets and tradeoffs • Represent Samsara externally—talks, open source, community engagement **Minimum Requirements:** • Bachelor's in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience • 8+ years building software (2+ in architect/technical leadership role) • Strong programming and design fundamentals • 4+ years on large-scale distributed systems • 4+ years leading technical projects across multiple teams **Nice to Have:** • GIS technologies: PostGIS, spatial SQL, GeoPandas/Shapely, QGIS • Geospatial data formats: GeoParquet, OpenStreetMap (OSM), OSM PBF • Experience ingesting, transforming, validating, or serving geospatial datasets • Comfort working in ambiguity and aligning teams without formal authority **Compensation** Base Salary: $162,400–$290,000 USD Plus: RSU grants, performance-based bonus, comprehensive benefits, professional development stipend, flexible remote model
