**Lead Software Engineer, Payment Platform** ## Roku Roku is changing how the world watches TV. As the #1 TV streaming platform in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Roku’s mission is to connect the entire TV ecosystem—connecting consumers to content, enabling publishers to build and monetize audiences, and giving advertisers unique ways to engage. ## About the team Roku Pay is one of Roku’s core monetization streams, covering **Pricing, Billing, and Payments**, plus integrations that support partners and consumers. The team is rebuilding the platform to support growth in both domestic and international markets—building scalable, performant, highly available systems on the bleeding edge of technology. ## About the role As a **Lead Engineer**, you’ll evaluate and implement new technologies and designs, influence the roadmap, and own key projects. You’ll set the standard for engineering excellence—leading by hands-on example—and evangelize best practices across development, QA, and infrastructure/ops. This is a deeply technical role with a strong expectation of being **heavily hands-on with agentic coding**. ## What you’ll be doing - Use **agentic AI coding tools** (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) daily: delegate tasks to AI, review/refine AI-generated code, and integrate into production - Build and ship features using AI coding agents—delegating implementation, reviewing output, and owning production quality - Own platform features and work directly with product and other engineering teams - Design and implement shared architectural layers and libraries (e.g., queuing, event systems, shared memory clusters) for reuse across teams - Evaluate emerging technologies and lead adoption of designs that address platform challenges - Participate in architectural discussions across teams and take ownership of key initiatives - Review technical specifications and mentor team members to raise the bar on quality - Stay hands-on with code and design reviews (majority of time ~**70% writing code**) - Champion best practices and a culture of innovation and reuse across development, QA, and infrastructure/ops ## We’re excited if you have - **Hands-on experience** with AI-assisted/agentic coding tools (Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor), including the ability to delegate, review, and integrate AI-generated code into production workflows - **15+ years** experience in large-scale backend services, specifically payment system architecture/implementation (or related industry experience) - Strong understanding of payment flows (e.g., payment processing, card tokenization, gateway integration, token vault management) - Understanding of sync vs async and online vs offline payment processing flows - Familiarity with compliance standards such as **SOX, PCI, 3DS**, etc. - Experience with the **RFP process** and deep technical evaluation of third-party vendors - Strong architectural design experience and a track record building highly available, scalable payment platforms - Multi-cloud experience is a plus; guidance across multiple cloud environments - Strong expertise with cloud solutions/systems across **AWS or GCP** (required) - Experience designing and leading highly complex transactional systems - Passion for technology and using it to drive business outcomes - Strong expertise in **Payments and billing systems** (required) - Strong experience building and adopting **CI/CD pipelines** ## Hybrid working (Roku approach) Teams generally work in the office *
