Backed by over a dozen top venture capital firms and incubated inside Founders Fund, General Matter is a mission-driven company focused on making nuclear energy the cleanest, safest, and most affordable source of baseload power. **About This Role** As a Software Engineering Intern, you'll develop performant, safe, and high-quality software supporting systems where reliability, performance, and safety are critical. You'll work with cross-functional teams including electrical engineers, software engineers, chemical engineers, manufacturing engineers, nuclear engineers, materials scientists, and physicists. **Focus Areas:** • **Backend**: High-performance services and APIs coordinating control systems and managing distributed hardware • **Distributed Systems**: Fault-tolerant coordination systems, real-time data pipelines, and critical infrastructure • **Tooling**: Developer platforms, CI/CD systems, observability tools, and deployment infrastructure **Responsibilities** • Design and implement high-performance software systems in C++ and Python • Support solution architecture and technology selection decisions • Participate in technical and code reviews • Build and maintain automated testing and CI/CD pipelines • Work closely with senior engineers on complex technical problems **Basic Qualifications** • Current undergraduate or graduate student in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field • Proficiency in C++ and/or Python • Strong CS fundamentals (algorithms, data structures, concurrency, system design) • Collaborative team member thriving in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments **Preferred Skills** • Distributed systems, observability tooling, or infrastructure as code experience • Python ecosystems for data pipelines, automation, or backend services • C++ performance optimization or low-level systems programming • Linux system programming (threading, IPC, kernel interfaces) • Portfolio of completed projects or products **Compensation & Benefits** • **Hourly Rate**: $32-$46/hour (based on academic standing) • Monthly housing stipend • Overtime pay eligible **Additional Requirements** • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary General Matter is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
