**Software Engineer — Reflections (Full-Stack)** **About the Role** The Reflections team at *The New York Times* is looking for a **Full-Stack Software Engineer** to help build **personalized experiences** that make The Times feel uniquely yours. You’ll work with a cross-functional team including **native mobile engineers, web/backend engineers, QA, product managers, designers, and data experts**. The team focuses on personalizing the Times experience—helping readers discover and engage with the journalism they value most through thoughtful, relevant, and engaging experiences. **Primary Technologies** React, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, GraphQL, Go, PostgreSQL, AWS **Responsibilities** - Lead **full-stack feature development** from design through production - Collaborate with design, product, web/backend, and native mobile engineers to refine requirements and technical discussions - Contribute ideas that shape product direction - Develop full-stack solutions and grow expertise across the stack - Participate in **on-call rotations** for systems and tools you build (production support) - Contribute to iteration on internal team processes and norms - Support and understand the value of **journalistic independence** and the mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world **Basic Qualifications** - 2+ years building and delivering **user-facing features** in a collaborative environment - 2+ years owning user-facing features from implementation through launch (with Product/Design/Engineering) - 2+ years navigating and unblocking technical challenges - 2+ years partnering with Product/Design/Engineering to solve user problems and deliver high-quality experiences - 2+ years with modern JavaScript technologies: **React, Node.js, TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, CSS** - 2+ years building backend services with **Go, Node.js/Express, GraphQL**, and cloud platforms (GCP or AWS) - 2+ years with data persistence (SQL/databases) - 2+ years troubleshooting/debugging/resolving issues in production **Preferred Qualifications** - Experience using **AI coding tools**, especially for agentic workflows - DevOps experience: **CI/CD**, automated testing/deployments, observability/monitoring (e.g., Drone, Jenkins) - Familiarity with **containers** and orchestration (e.g., Kubernetes, Docker) - Understanding of **caching** and **content delivery** **Location / Work Model** - **Hybrid** role at The New York Times headquarters in **New York City** - Typically requires coming into the office **two days per week** - **#LI-Hybrid** **Compensation & Benefits (U.S.)** - Annual base pay range: **$110,000 — $130,000 USD** - May include variable pay (e.g., bonus, restricted stock) and benefits such as medical/dental/vision, 401(k) match, paid vacation/sick days, parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and professional development **GenAI Policy (Hiring Process)** - Submit **your own work**; do not use GenAI tools to generate substantive content during the application and interview process. - Engineering candidates will be told which GenAI tools (if any) are permitted for technical assessments. **Equal Opportunity** The New York Times is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages applicants from all backgrounds to apply.
