**Software Engineer III — Developer Portal (ID.me)** **Company Overview** ID.me is a next-generation digital identity wallet that helps individuals securely prove their identity online. ID.me supports 152M+ users across 20 federal agencies, 45 state government agencies, and 70+ healthcare organizations, and is used by 600+ consumer brands. **Role Overview** Join the **Developer Portal** team building the self-service platform that enables organizations to rapidly integrate ID.me Identity proofing. This is a **backend-leaning full-stack** role: you’ll design and build the services, APIs, and data models behind the portal, and also ship the user-facing surfaces using **Next.js/React**. **Key Responsibilities** - **Build & ship self-service developer features:** Deliver capabilities end-to-end (API contracts → database schema → frontend integration → deployment). - **Own API contracts & data models:** Make safe, additive changes with backwards compatibility and versioning. - **Authentication, authorization & identity:** Implement secure capabilities across OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, enterprise SSO, multi-tenant authorization, relationship-based access control, session/credential management, and identity-aware provisioning. - **Cross-functional collaboration:** Partner with Product, Design, Architecture, and platform teams to clarify requirements and maintain a coherent developer experience. **Required Qualifications** - Bachelor’s degree in CS/Engineering (or equivalent experience) - **4+ years** building and operating production backend services (less for PhD/Master’s) - Strong backend + REST API experience (e.g., **Java Spring Boot**, Ruby on Rails, Node.js, or similar) - Deep relational database experience (complex SQL + safe production schema migrations) - Experience designing REST API contracts (versioning, backwards compatibility) and documenting with **OpenAPI** (or similar) - Working proficiency with **TypeScript + React** (able to ship customer-facing features) - Familiarity with authentication/authorization concepts (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, etc.) - Ability to independently drive small-to-medium initiatives end-to-end with cross-team coordination - Proficiency with **AI-assisted development tooling** (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor) and commitment to an AI-first engineering culture - Strong communication and collaboration across Product/Design/Engineering **Preferred Qualifications** - Experience building **developer experience** (SDKs, API docs, quickstarts, sandboxes, error/debugging surfaces, self-serve onboarding) - Experience with developer-facing platforms (developer portals, API platforms, auth platforms, cloud/payments platforms, etc.) - Modern **Java (21+)** and **Spring Boot** - **Ruby on Rails** - **PostgreSQL** (highly relational/graph-like modeling) - **Next.js** and/or micro-frontend architectures (e.g., Module Federation) - Enterprise identity standards (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, SAML 2.0, SCIM) - Relationship-based authorization systems (e.g., SpiceDB, OpenFGA, Zanzibar-inspired) - Policy engines (e.g., **OPA** or **Cedar**) - Feature-flag-driven migrations in customer-facing production systems - OpenAPI tooling/docs-as-code/SDK generation - Familiarity with identity verification, fraud prevention, KYC/AML, or regulated identity systems - Knowledge of **NIST 800-63 IAL/AAL** guidelines - GCP and cloud-native developmen
