**Staff Machine Learning Model Risk Specialist** **About the Role** Upstart's Model Risk team is seeking a Staff Machine Learning Model Risk Specialist to independently execute core components of the model risk management program supporting Upstart Bank. You'll oversee risk across a diverse and growing inventory of models and Generative AI applications, including sophisticated machine learning models used in lending and models supporting fraud, compliance, finance, capital and liquidity, servicing, and operational risk. **Key Responsibilities** • Partner with ML teams, GenAI developers, business sponsors, and stakeholders to maintain accurate inventories, risk assessments, documentation, and governance materials • Review methodologies, assumptions, data inputs, system designs, performance measures, controls, and limitations • Apply risk-based approach to evaluate quantitative methods ranging from traditional statistical models to complex ML and GenAI applications • Conduct and document model risk assessments, monitoring reviews, and targeted quantitative analyses • Help develop practical governance approaches for emerging technologies like ML and GenAI • Respond to model and GenAI-related questions from regulators and external stakeholders • Track model risk issues, remediation plans, and emerging risks **Minimum Qualifications** • Master's degree in quantitative field (finance, mathematics, economics, statistics, or related) • 4+ years in model risk management, validation, governance, ML, data science, or related technical risk function • Internship or project experience in model risk, validation, ML, or data science • Basic understanding of AI/ML methodologies (tree-based models, neural networks) • General familiarity with GenAI applications • Experience coding in R, Python, or similar languages **Preferred Qualifications** • PhD in quantitative field • 5+ years in model risk management, governance, ML, data science, or related fields • Familiarity with GenAI evaluation approaches, prompt design, RAG, tool use, and monitoring • Experience assessing models outside credit underwriting • Strong communication skills for varying technical audiences • Proactive mindset with initiative • Understanding of model monitoring, fairness, and explainability • Advanced coding in R, Python, SQL, and Git experience • Knowledge of consumer lending, credit risk, or regulated ML/GenAI environments **Location & Travel** Remote (US or Canada). Digital-first company with quarterly in-person onsites (1-2 times per quarter, 2-4 consecutive days). **Compensation** • US Remote: $157,000 – $217,500 USD • Canada Remote: $140,300 – $175,000 CAD • Includes target bonuses, equity compensation, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k)
