## Staff Software Engineer, Payments Compliance ### The Community You Will Join Airbnb Payments enables people worldwide to exchange money frictionlessly through a global payments platform. The Payments Compliance team is essential to ensure Airbnb can operate across markets without facing fines or being prohibited from conducting business. As a **Staff Engineer** on Payments Compliance, you’ll drive architectural decisions and implementation for compliance systems. ### The Difference You Will Make You’ll lead technical direction for compliance experiences and systems that: - Power compliance decisions behind user-facing experiences - Collect and manage required information - Screen individuals and businesses against global regulatory requirements - Continuously audit that compliance controls are enforced as intended You’ll collaborate with cross-functional and cross-geographical teams to build solutions that are flexible, always available, efficient, and scalable as regulations evolve. ### A Typical Day - Lead development and refinement of systems powering compliance - Partner with technical leaders to design and build service-oriented, configurable, auditable compliance systems that leverage existing Airbnb capabilities - Work with Product, Design, Policy, Operations, and other partners to define and ship impactful features - Partner with other engineering teams to serve users holistically - Lead and mentor engineers (inside and outside your immediate team) - Advocate for engineering process improvements and drive systemic changes to reduce toil and increase technical quality and operational excellence ### Your Expertise - **9+ years** of industry experience in a fast-paced tech environment - BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science (or related field) or equivalent experience - Excellent communication skills and ability to work across engineering teams - Strong problem-solving skills; experience leading a team on-call for production systems - Technical leadership: hands-on experience leading project teams and setting technical direction/strategy - **Nice to have:** knowledge of regulatory compliance standards and experience implementing controls - Proficiency in one or more back-end languages (Java/Ruby/Go/C++/etc.) - Experience with HTML, CSS, and modern JavaScript frameworks (e.g., React) - Exposure to architectural patterns for high-scale web and data applications - Future-looking mindset for long-term compliance needs - End-to-end ownership mentality across team boundaries ### Your Location **US - Remote Eligible.** The role may include occasional work at an Airbnb office or attendance at offsites as agreed with your manager.
