**Senior Engineer - Web Platforms** **About the Role** The New York Times is searching for a **Senior Software Engineer** for the **Web Platforms** team to help grow the platform that powers the presentation of content for **web and mobile app webviews**. You’ll improve **developer experience, performance, and resiliency** of our web applications. **Primary Tech**: React, Node, TypeScript, GraphQL **Reporting To**: Engineering Manager, Web Frameworks --- **Responsibilities** - Develop the platform while ensuring **reliability, scalability, and performance** as it grows - Promote **high-quality releases** focused on **user experience** and **web performance** - Collaborate to shape **priorities** and the **long-term roadmap** - Provide clear feedback via **pairing, design reviews, and code reviews** - Support **on-call**, incident response, and troubleshooting for platform-level escalations - Partner with teams through technical discussions, **technical documentation**, and issue troubleshooting - Demonstrate support for **journalistic independence** and the mission to **seek the truth and help people understand the world** --- **Basic Qualifications** - **5+ years** full-stack web development experience with modern **JavaScript/TypeScript** ecosystem (build tools, monorepo tooling/practices, frontend frameworks—**React, Vite, TanStack Start**) - Experience building **centralized systems** for internal engineering teams - Familiarity with automation for **code quality**, **release management**, and **developer workflow** improvements - Experience designing, implementing, testing, and documenting projects - Experience with **GenAI tooling** (e.g., skills creation or agentic workflows) - Experience with **CI/CD** (uses **GitHub Actions**) - Experience leading **complex initiatives** --- **Preferred Qualifications** - Experience with **client-side GraphQL tooling** and applying GraphQL best practices (data fetching, caching, error handling, performance optimization) - Experience on a **platform team** building/supporting shared tools/frameworks/services used by multiple product teams - Ability to evaluate and adopt evolving web standards and industry practices across frontend tooling, JavaScript/TypeScript, and CSS --- **Work Model** - **Hybrid remote/in-office** - **#LI-Hybrid** --- **Compensation & Benefits** - Annual base pay range: **$140,000 – $160,000 USD** - Eligible for variable pay (annual bonus) and restricted stock - Benefits include medical/dental/vision, **FSA**, **401(k) match**, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation/sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement, and professional development programs --- **Candidate Use of GenAI Tools** To keep the process fair, submit **your own work** and **do not use GenAI tools** to generate substantive content during the application and interview process.
