With 100,000+ active communities and ~130M daily active unique visitors, Reddit is one of the internet’s largest sources of information. **Role: Staff Software Engineer (Observability)** This role is **fully remote**. Reddit has a flexible first workforce. The Observability (OBS) team is looking for an Engineer who thrives at the intersection of infrastructure and software development. The team owns a suite of tools that help engineers understand their creations, primarily using open-source solutions at scale. You’ll work with and contribute to open source tools including **Prometheus**, **Thanos**, and more. **What you’ll work on** - **Monitoring:** Processes billions of data points per minute and supports large-scale Prometheus/Thanos deployments. You’ll tackle performance engineering for distributed query systems and build product improvements to reduce user pain. - **Logging:** Operates a logging platform based on **Vector** and **Clickhouse**, processing millions of logs per day. - **Distributed Tracing:** Tracing is based on **OpenTelemetry (OTEL)**, **Clickhouse**, and **Grafana**—currently handling tens of millions of events and building new ways for users to leverage and understand the data. **In your day-to-day, you can expect to:** - Collaborate with software engineers to create and maintain foundational infrastructure platform capabilities. - Deliver software that improves availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of observability components. - Contribute feedback to the technical and strategic direction of eventing. - Automate critical aspects of the event-driven development process. - Share on-call responsibilities. - Contribute upstream changes to the open source projects the team uses. **You have:** - **7+ years** of experience developing internet-scale software, preferably in infrastructure contexts. - Familiarity with distributed systems development (bonus if you’ve worked with Prometheus, Thanos, Grafana, Vector, Clickhouse, OTEL, Loki). - Experience developing on Kubernetes or similar distributed systems (Kubernetes controller/operator experience is a huge plus). - Strong troubleshooting skills across both systems and software. - Experience engineering large systems, tracking work, and being a self-starter. - Excellent communication skills for a service-oriented team and company. **Benefits (highlights):** - Comprehensive healthcare benefits and income replacement programs - 401(k) with employer match - Global benefit programs (workspace, professional development, caregiving support) - Family planning support - Gender-affirming care - Mental health & coaching benefits - Flexible vacation and paid volunteer time off - Generous paid parental leave **Pay Transparency (US base salary range):** - **$217,000 — $303,900 USD** *Final offer amounts depend on factors including skills, depth of experience, and relevant licenses/credentials.* **Interview recording notice (select roles/locations):** In select roles and locations, interviews may be recorded, transcribed, and summarized using AI.
