**Perception Machine Learning Engineer - Continuous Learning** **About the Role** Join Waymo's Perception team to build intelligent systems that "see" the world and shape the future of autonomous driving. You'll design and build automated, closed-loop systems that enable continuous improvement of perception models as our fleet encounters real-world scenarios. **Key Responsibilities** • **Architect Infrastructure** – Design and scale data pipelines to mine, ingest, and manage massive volumes of sensor data from our fleet • **Drive Model Improvement** – Deploy active learning algorithms to identify and select impactful training data, ensuring models continuously adapt with incremental updates • **Ensure Model Quality** – Develop evaluation methods and ground-truth free performance metrics to detect regressions • **Optimize Data Efficiency** – Conduct large-scale experiments on data balancing, subset selection, and label quality; lead automated curation strategies • **Solve Long-Tail Challenges** – Build robust pipelines for rare, safety-critical real-world scenarios • **Innovate with Model Signals** – Use uncertainty estimation and embedding analysis to uncover blind spots and guide data acquisition • **Collaborate Cross-Functionally** – Work with researchers and operations teams on end-to-end model development **Required Qualifications** • Bachelor's degree in Machine Learning, Robotics, or Computer Science • 3+ years professional experience in Machine Learning and/or Computer Vision • Proven hands-on experience with active learning in production environments • Strong expertise building large-scale ML data pipelines (mining, extraction, auto-labeling, ingestion) • Deep understanding of data curation techniques (balancing, core set selection, sampling) • Proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks (PyTorch or JAX) • Strong software engineering skills for production-ready code **Preferred Qualifications** • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Machine Learning, Robotics, or Computer Science • Publications at top-tier conferences (CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS, IROS, RSS, AAAI, IJCV, PAMI) • C++ experience • Experience building data-centric infrastructure from the ground up **Compensation** 💰 $175,000 – $215,000 USD (base salary) Plus: Annual bonus, equity incentive plan, and comprehensive benefits **Location** Hybrid role reporting to a Technical Lead Manager
