## Software Engineer, Cryptography ### About the Role & Team Join the **Cryptographic Services & Infrastructure** team at Robinhood. You’ll help secure and manage cryptographic keys and enable engineering teams to safely leverage core capabilities like **encryption and decryption**. In this role, you’ll contribute to Robinhood’s new **in-house card-processing service**—a critical initiative bringing core capabilities in-house with meaningful ownership across **software, infrastructure, security, and operations**. **Location:** Bellevue, WA and Menlo Park, CA (in-person expected **at least 3 days/week**). ### What you’ll do (day-to-day) - Design, build, and maintain production services and infrastructure for **key management**, **encryption**, and **decryption**. - Architect, launch, and scale Robinhood’s in-house **card-processing environment** to protect sensitive card, financial, and tax-related data. - Write clean, maintainable production code and build operational tooling across software, infrastructure, and security controls. - Collaborate with internal engineering teams on migrations, drive adoption of shared cryptographic capabilities, and ensure safe system design. - Participate in a rotating **on-call** schedule to maintain high availability, security, and operational reliability as processing volume grows. ### What you bring - Experience building, operating, or supporting **production services**, **distributed systems**, or **infrastructure**. - Proficiency writing production code in at least one modern language (e.g., **Python, Go, Java, C#, C++**) with strong reasoning about complex systems. - Comfort working across multiple domains: software development, infrastructure, and operational reliability. - Clear, concise communication—able to explain technical decisions and collaborate proactively. - Curiosity and willingness to learn security engineering principles; participate in a light on-call rotation. ### Bonus points - Experience in **SRE**, platform engineering, or cloud security. - Familiarity with **key management**, **secrets management**, or core cryptographic concepts (e.g., symmetric encryption, public/private key pairs). - Experience handling sensitive financial/payment/card data in regulated environments. - Experience supporting internal customer migrations or driving platform adoption across engineering teams. ### What we offer - Challenging, high-impact work to grow your career. - Performance-driven compensation with multipliers for outsized impact, plus **bonus programs, equity ownership, and 401(k) matching**. - Best-in-class benefits, including **100% paid health insurance** for employees (with **90% coverage** for dependents). - Lifestyle wallet (flexible benefits spending for wellness, learning, and more). - Employer-paid life & disability insurance, fertility benefits, and mental health benefits. - Time off to recharge (company holidays, paid time off, sick time, parental leave, and more). - Exceptional office experience (catered meals, events, and comfortable workspaces). ### Pay transparency (base pay range) Base pay depends on location and compensation zone. Expected base pay ranges: - **Zone 1 (Menlo Park, CA; New York, NY; Bellevue, WA; Washington, DC):** **$166,000 — $195,000 USD** - **Zone 2 (Denver, CO; Westlake, TX; Chicago, IL):** **$147,000 — $172,000 USD** - **Zone 3 (Lake Mary, FL; Clearwater, FL; Gainesville, FL):** **$130,000 — $152,000 USD** In addition to base pay, this role is el
