**Lead, Data Governance** **About Alpaca:** Alpaca is a US-headquartered, global leader in agent-first brokerage infrastructure for stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, fixed income, 24/5 trading, and more. We're a licensed financial services company serving hundreds of institutions across 40 countries with institutional-grade APIs, totaling over 10 million brokerage accounts. **Your Role:** As Lead, Data Governance, you'll build and run Alpaca's data governance and data security program across our lakehouse, analytics tools, and internal data products. You'll set standards for data classification, access controls, and protection while working closely with Data Engineering and Data Science. This fully remote, individual contributor role reports to our CISO. **What You'll Do:** • Build and maintain data governance policies, classification standards, and ownership models • Own data access governance for lakehouse and analytics stack (Trino, Ranger, Cube, Metabase) • Work with Data Engineering on technical controls and service account management • Set data quality standards and track improvements • Maintain data inventory, metadata, and lineage documentation • Review data-related vendors and new use cases with Security, Privacy, and Legal • Support sensitive and cross-border data requests, including PII handling • Prepare evidence for SOC 2, ISO 27001, CSA STAR, and regulatory exams • Track data risks and control gaps for Enterprise Risk Management • Define guardrails for AI and agentic use of corporate data **Must-Haves:** • 5+ years in data governance, data security, GRC, or privacy engineering • 2+ years with modern data platforms (lakehouse/warehouse, SQL engines, BI) • Knowledge of data governance frameworks (DAMA-DMBOK, NIST) • Experience building/running data classification and access control programs • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (GCP a plus) and analytics tooling • Working knowledge of financial services privacy/regulatory requirements (GDPR, CCPA) • Experience supporting SOC 2, ISO 27001, or similar audits • Strong collaboration skills with engineering teams • Excellent written and verbal communication • Comfortable as an IC with no direct reports **Nice-to-Haves:** Fintech/brokerage background • Hands-on experience with Trino, Ranger, dbt, Cube, Metabase, Airflow, or Iceberg • AI/ML tool review experience • Privacy program or vendor/DPA review experience • Relevant certifications (CIPT, CIPM, CISM, CISSP, CDMP, CRISC) • First governance hire experience • Japan or EU data residency experience • ERM or operational risk exposure **We Offer:** Competitive salary & stock options • Health benefits • $500 one-time home-office setup • $150/month stipend via Brex Card Alpaca is an equal opportunity employer committed to building a diverse workforce.
