Software Engineer, Applied AI Infrastructure
Nuro · Mountain View, California (HQ)
About this role
**Software Engineer, Applied AI Infrastructure** **About Nuro** Nuro is building Level 4 autonomous driving technology and a universal autonomy platform. Founded in 2016, the company has raised over $2B from investors including Uber, NVIDIA, Google, and Softbank. **About the Team** This team builds the infrastructure that enables AI agents to operate autonomously within Nuro's engineering organization. The mandate is to amplify engineer and researcher output by 100x through trustworthy autonomous work, with a focus on rigorous closed-loop evaluation systems. **About the Role** You'll work on three core areas: • **Closed-loop evaluation** — Build the most rigorous evaluation system for AI work, measuring acceptance/revert/override rates and detecting regressions before humans notice • **Agent platform** — Runtime for safe autonomous agents: orchestration, sandboxing, tool frameworks, memory, permissioning, and observability • **Autoresearch infrastructure** — Automate the research loop itself: agents that form hypotheses, launch experiments, evaluate honestly, and propose changes **First Two Quarters** - Build closed-loop measurement per workflow to guide autonomy expansion - Move autoresearch from assisted to unattended for bounded experiments - Design isolation and permissioning for agents acting on production systems **About You** - 3+ years software engineering experience (2+ with Master's); Staff-level candidates bring deeper scope - Deep, current understanding of LLM training and post-training (SFT, preference optimization, RL) - Knowledge of inference: attention, KV-cache, batching, quantization, speculative decoding - Production LLM agent systems experience (tool use, orchestration, sandboxing, retrieval) - Strong backend/distributed systems background at scale - Strong Python skills - Opinionated about evaluation and benchmarking - End-to-end work style; comfortable with unstructured problems - Preferred: post-training/fine-tuning, ML infrastructure, inference serving at scale, agent architecture patterns, tool-integration protocols, DX/platform/security background, Go/C++/Rust **Compensation** Base pay range: $193,930 - $352,290 (level-dependent).
