**AI Native Engineer** **About Legalist** Legalist is a tech-enabled alternative asset manager using proprietary data-driven origination to invest in uncorrelated legal and government-payment assets. Founded from Y Combinator in 2016, managing over $1.7 billion for endowments, foundations, and family offices. **Role Summary** Join our team to build AI-powered products and workflows directly with our Co-founder. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role for someone with a track record of building diverse projects and using AI as a core part of software development. You'll operate in a fast-paced environment, taking business problems to technical solutions with rapid iteration. **Key Responsibilities** • Design and build new AI products, tools, and features • Build applications using LLMs and foundation model APIs • Develop AI agents and multi-step workflows connecting models with internal/external systems • Build integrations with third-party APIs and internal data sources • Design and implement RAG pipelines (retrieval, embeddings, vector search, context management) • Build backend services and APIs supporting AI applications • Prototype quickly, test thoroughly, and productionize successful solutions • Evaluate models based on accuracy, latency, cost, and reliability • Build evaluation and testing processes for model outputs • Stay current on new models, tools, frameworks, and AI capabilities **Required Qualifications** • 3+ years professional software development experience • Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, or similar) • Experience building AI agents, tool-calling workflows, or agentic systems • Strong understanding of APIs, backend development, databases, and cloud infrastructure • Experience shipping software from prototype to production • Familiarity with prompt design, context management, and LLM reliability techniques • Comfortable working independently with ambiguous requirements • **Local to NYC and available for regular in-person collaboration**
