**Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Online Storage)** **About the Role** Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for our Online Storage team's database infrastructure. You'll lead strategy for Relational and KeyValue databases that power mission-critical financial systems, working across OLTP and OLAP infrastructure. **Key Responsibilities** • Set technical strategy on a year-long timescale and align with business-impacting projects • Design and build scalable datastore platform components with multi-region, horizontally scalable, globally available solutions • Develop control planes for managing hundreds of databases at scale (schema/data migrations, disaster recovery, sharding, performance tuning) • Collaborate with product, infrastructure, and SRE teams on database solutions • Own team operations and availability through monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, and on-call support • Foster quality culture through code review standards, design advocacy, and tech talks • Develop talent through feedback, guidance, and leading by example **Required Experience** • 8+ years designing and developing backend systems at scale (Python, Kotlin, or similar) • 5+ years hands-on database expertise with Relational/Distributed SQL (MySQL, PostgreSQL, TiDB/Vitess) • Deep knowledge of schema design, query optimization, scaling, partitioning, sharding, and performance tuning • Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Spark, and cloud database operations • Track record delivering major features and system components through technical planning • Strong communication skills and ability to thrive in ambiguity • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent practical experience **Compensation & Benefits** **Base Pay:** $230K-$290K (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT) | $204K-$264K (other US states) **Equity Grade:** 13 • 100% subsidized medical, dental, vision coverage • Flexible spending wallets (tech, food, lifestyle, family forming) • Competitive PTO and holiday schedules • ESPP program • Remote-first position **Location:** Remote
