We're on a mission to bring everyone the inspiration to create a life they love. **The Role:** We're seeking a passionate Sr. Staff Backend Engineer to join the Pinterest Assistant team. You'll define the architecture and technical direction for our visual-first, AI-powered companion that helps Pinners go from inspiration to action. As a technical leader, you'll drive foundational investments across orchestration, memory, personalization, context management, tool integrations, APIs, and platform infrastructure. **What You'll Do:** • Define and drive the technical vision and architecture for backend systems powering Pinterest Assistant at scale • Lead design and implementation of core Assistant platform components • Drive technical strategy and identify foundational platform investments • Partner with Product, Design, Frontend, ML, and Infrastructure teams • Shape architecture for AI-powered applications including retrieval, context assembly, and model orchestration • Establish engineering best practices for production LLM and agent systems • Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar across the organization • Navigate ambiguity and make pragmatic architectural decisions • Influence technical direction across teams and Pinterest's broader AI platform strategy • Stay current with advances in LLMs and agentic systems **What We're Looking For:** • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience • 10+ years backend software engineering experience • 3+ years as a technical lead driving large-scale distributed systems • Strong experience with Python, TypeScript, Node, or similar languages • Experience building platforms or foundational infrastructure • Understanding of modern model-driven systems and AI-powered products • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills • Track record of mentoring senior engineers • Product-minded and execution-oriented mindset **Nice to Have:** • Experience building AI-powered or LLM-based products at scale • Experience with conversational AI, agents, tool calling, or multimodal experiences • Familiarity with RAG, embeddings, context management, or memory architecture • Experience with evaluation frameworks and quality frameworks for AI products **Work Arrangement:** Hybrid - In-office once per quarter, can be situated anywhere in the country.
