**Affirm — Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Order Platform)** Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly—helping consumers buy now and pay later without hidden fees or compounding interest. As a **Staff Software Engineer on the Order Platform team**, you’ll shape the systems that power every Affirm purchase after checkout—**orders, captures, refunds, and settlement**—and drive the technical strategy that enables merchants and consumers to transact reliably at scale. We’re a small, senior team doing high-leverage work within **Financial Platforms**. Today, we’re consolidating internal platform capabilities behind Affirm’s post-checkout APIs by drawing clean domain boundaries, migrating existing merchants, and enabling future product launches. You’ll set technical direction, mentor engineers, and own decisions that matter for years. --- ### What You’ll Do - Set **technical strategy** for your team on a year-long time scale and align it with critical, business-impacting projects. - Collaborate across the product development lifecycle with **product management, design, and analytics** to ensure technical sustainability and that risks/trade-offs are well understood and managed. - Act as a **force-multiplier** by defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes. - Own team operations and availability: ensure the right **monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, and alerting** are in place to support “keep the lights on” on-call. - Foster a culture of quality and ownership by setting **code review and design standards**, and advocating for them beyond your team through writing and tech talks. - Help develop talent by providing feedback and guidance and leading by example. --- ### What We Look For - **8+ years** designing, developing, and launching **backend systems at scale** using languages such as **Python or Kotlin**. - Proven experience building **highly available distributed systems** using technologies like **AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes**. - Strong analytical skills for designing services with clear API boundaries, reliability, and careful handling of **consistency, idempotency, and failure modes**—ideally in **payments, commerce, ledger, or other financially sensitive domains**. - Experience delivering major features/system components and/or deprecating existing functionality via a clear **technical and execution plan**. - Writes high-quality code that is easy to understand and reuse. - Thrives in ambiguity; comfortable moving from low-level implementation details to the architecture of large systems. - Demonstrated growth by gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers. - Strong **verbal and written communication** skills. - Requires either equivalent practical experience or a **Bachelor’s degree** in a related field. --- ### Compensation & Location - **Base Pay Grade:** P - **Equity Grade:** USA 13 - **USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT):** $230,000 – $290,000 / year - **USA base pay range (all other U.S. states):** $204,000 – $264,000 / year - **#LI-Remote** Affirm is **remote-first**.
