**Staff Engineer, Query Optimization** **About the Role** Join the MongoDB Server Query Optimization team and help build a world-class distributed open-source query optimizer. You'll play a crucial role in the experience and performance of data processing, responsible for the MongoDB Query Language and the lifecycle of each query through parsing, optimization, and plan selection. **Location** US offices or remote in North America (presence in New York, Dublin, Seattle, Palo Alto, and Chicago) **Requirements** • 10+ years in data management systems, distributed systems, or large-scale backend engineering • Production-level code experience with large user bases, robust design, and rigorous code quality • CS degree or equivalent with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture • Large codebase experience in C++ or systems programming language • Strong foundation in core database internals (query optimization experience is a bonus; compiler, transpiler, or distributed storage backgrounds also valued) **Key Responsibilities** • Innovate in flexible schema databases and build world-class query optimization systems • Research state-of-the-art query systems to inform design • Provide technical vision and direction based on product knowledge and industry trends • Set initiative-level strategy, architect plans, and lead team execution • Design, implement, test, and support features for query performance, language enhancements, and diagnostics • Mentor and grow team members through active coaching • Collaborate across client drivers, cloud services, enterprise tools, and other teams **Success Milestones** • 3 months: Contribute to next major version projects and fix bugs in stable releases • 6 months: Take on code review responsibilities and actively draft/review feature designs • 12 months: Contribute to long-term technical roadmap based on query space expertise **Compensation (U.S.)** $151,000 – $297,000 USD base salary Req.
