Since this role supports how products and features reach the edge, you’ll partner across teams to shape, scale, and secure Fastly’s core experience. As a Staff Software Engineer, you’ll work on complex problems in high-availability systems in a supportive environment built on high trust, mutual respect, and shared ownership. --- ## What You’ll Do - Support, deploy, and share responsibility for large-scale Perl production systems that store and ship configuration changes to thousands of nodes globally. - Drive architectural and operational improvements by evolving complex legacy systems into maintainable, performant Go microservices. - Provide technical leadership for engineering projects, coordinate with stakeholders, and motivate progress. - Collaborate across engineering teams to ensure configuration systems meet requirements for new features and capabilities. - Mentor and support other engineers to foster knowledge sharing, innovation, and teamwork. - Participate in an on-call rotation. --- ## What We’re Looking For - Significant domain-relevant experience building highly reliable distributed systems (Fastly Staff Engineers typically have 7+ years related experience). - Strong understanding of Go. - Pragmatic approach to legacy systems, including experience with Perl or willingness to learn Perl to support, troubleshoot, and enhance core infrastructure. - Ability to drive and deliver complex projects spanning multiple teams with cross-organizational influence. - Communicative, empathetic teammate who works well in a remote environment and is comfortable with asynchronous workflows. - Adaptable problem-solver who learns from mistakes, navigates ambiguity, and balances short-term delivery with long-term quality through thoughtful tradeoffs. --- ## We’ll Be Super Impressed If You Have Experience With - Writing production-level code in Perl. - Containerization platforms such as Kubernetes and Docker. - Monitoring solutions such as Prometheus and Grafana. --- ## Work Hours - Available during core business hours. - Occasional nights and weekends may be required for on-call support. --- ## Work Location(s) & Travel **Preferred locations:** - San Francisco, CA - Denver, CO - New York, NY Fastly uses a largely hybrid model for most roles. There’s a strong preference for hybrid near a local office, though exceptionally qualified remote candidates within the US may be considered. Travel may be required as needed for the role or as requested by your manager. --- ## Salary & Benefits **Estimated salary range:** $211,370 – $253,644 Starting salary may vary based on experience, skills, qualifications, and location.
