**Senior Engineering Manager, Direct-To-Consumer Messaging** **About the Role:** Lead the Integrated Messaging team within the Messaging Platforms group at The New York Times. This full-stack engineering team is responsible for end-to-end direct-to-consumer messaging, including high-throughput delivery engines for native push notifications and internal applications for newsroom and marketing orchestration. You'll design the team and technology to expand into new channels like WhatsApp and SMS, overseeing a diverse technical stack from low-latency backend integrations to user-facing tools. **Location:** New York City (Hybrid, 2+ days/week) **Key Responsibilities:** • Lead a high-performing full-stack engineering team • Guide technical vision for multi-channel expansion (WhatsApp, SMS, emerging channels) • Oversee high-availability delivery services and internal management tools • Ensure reliable, sub-second push notification delivery • Partner with Product, Design, and Data teams on strategic priorities • Contribute to broader group leadership initiatives • Champion technical excellence and platform stability **Basic Qualifications:** • 3+ years as an Engineering Manager with proven track record • Full-stack leadership experience managing cross-disciplinary teams (Frontend, Backend, DevOps) • Experience driving technical or organizational transformation • Strong people development and mentoring skills **Preferred Qualifications:** • Experience with Agentic AI workflows and LLM-based automation • Messaging domain expertise (APNs, FCM, SMS gateways, WhatsApp Business API) • Modern web stack experience (React, Node.js) • Cloud proficiency (AWS, serverless, event-driven architectures) **Compensation:** $185,000 – $210,000 USD base salary, plus variable pay, bonus, and restricted stock.
