**Software Engineer II — AI Security (Tanium)** ## Summary / Objectives Tanium is seeking a **Software Engineer II** to help build a new **AI Security** solution that enables the world’s largest enterprises to secure **AI agents** and the **endpoints** they run on. In this full-stack role with a strong emphasis on **backend engineering**, you’ll design and develop **high-scale, distributed systems** that give customers **visibility into and control over agentic AI** across their environments. You’ll work with technologies that power AI agents and agent harnesses, including **LLM integrations**, **tool-calling frameworks**, and the **Model Context Protocol (MCP)**. This is an opportunity to shape a product at the forefront of AI security and make a significant impact at a company transforming how organizations manage and secure their technology environments. ## Essential Job Functions - Contribute to the design and development of **high-scale, distributed backend systems** for visibility and control of **agentic AI** across customer environments. - Build services and integrations using **LLM APIs**, **tool-calling frameworks**, and **MCP**; design **RAG** and **data pipelines** that support AI-driven capabilities. - Use AI coding assistants and agent tooling effectively; **review, refactor, and debug** AI-generated code with sound judgment. - Build and maintain Tanium products with an **agile development team**. - Design, develop, and test new product ideas from the ground up with input from **product management**. - Work on small teams tackling big challenges in common components such as: - A common data service unifying endpoint data across the ecosystem - Time series data for dashboarding and reporting - **GraphQL** APIs enabling partner integrations (e.g., Salesforce) - Deliver higher-level services enabled by core services, spanning **security, operations, and auditing**. ## Minimum & Preferred Qualifications ### Education - **Bachelor’s degree** in Computer Science (or related field) preferred, or equivalent experience. ### Experience - **3+ years** of industry software engineering experience. - Experience designing and building **high-impact, high-performance, scalable, observable, and maintainable** backend services and APIs. - Experience building and shipping **AI-powered products/agents at scale**, including **LLM integrations** and **tool-calling**. - Hands-on experience building an **MCP server or integration** that ran in a production environment. - Experience building **retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)** and supporting data pipelines. - Experience building backend services and enterprise web applications serving large user bases (e.g., **millions of users**). - Knowledge of at least one: **Golang (preferred)**, **Node.js**, **Python**, **Ruby**, or **Rust**. - Experience with **React**, **TypeScript**, **JavaScript**, and other front-end technologies/frameworks. - Ability to work with relational databases such as **Postgres**, **SQL**, or **MySQL**. - Experience with **HTTP API** design and development. - Experience with modern engineering/automation tools such as **Git** and **Jenkins**. - **Preferred:** foundation in security principles (secure design, authentication/authorization, threat modeling). ### Other - Sound judgment balancing rapid development with long-term maintainability and supportability. - Belief in the importance of **automated testing**. - Strong debugging skills; able to respond under pr
