## Senior Software Engineer, Business Map **Location:** Remote (US) Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world—helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy. **Business Map** is a new team in Toast’s growing Enterprise engineering org. We own how Toast models a business: its locations, the organization that owns them, and how they’re grouped. We build the foundation other teams use to serve customers with many locations, franchises, and non-restaurant locations. --- ### Responsibilities - Design, build, and ship backend features for Business Map—from written design through production rollout - Own a feature area end to end (tests, monitoring, and staged rollouts behind feature flags) - Partner with engineers on teams adopting new location and organization data - Join the team’s on-call rotation and fix root causes of issues found there - Write feature designs and provide thoughtful code reviews - Help newer engineers through pairing and code review --- ### Requirements - 5+ years building backend services in Java, Kotlin, or another object-oriented language - Proficient with relational databases and SQL (Postgres) - Experience owning and operating production systems (including on-call and debugging live issues) - Experience with distributed systems, event-driven messaging, or microservices - Track record taking ambiguous projects from design to production - Clear written and verbal communication with engineers and product partners - Experience (or strong interest) using coding agents and AI-assisted development day to day --- ### What will help you stand out - Experience making changes in a large, long-lived codebase serving production traffic - Experience with multi-tenant data models, account hierarchies, or multi-location systems - Familiarity with gRPC, GraphQL, or event streaming platforms - React and TypeScript experience for internal tools - Knowledge of restaurant or multi-location business operations --- ### AI at Toast (Hiring) Toast uses AI tools to support recruiters and interviewers (e.g., note-taking, summarization, and interview documentation). **Hiring decisions are made by people**, and you’ll be asked to complete interviews/assessments without real-time AI tools unless otherwise stated.
