About this role
**Software Engineer, Sensors and System Software (C++, Linux)** **About the team** The Sensors and System Software team is crucial to autonomous driving, developing the core software that allows vehicles to perceive and understand the world around them. Join the team to contribute to groundbreaking autonomous driving technology—working with state-of-the-art sensors and pushing the boundaries of perception. **About the role** You’ll integrate diverse sensors and embedded hardware into our software pipelines. You’ll design, develop, debug, and maintain the core software stack, while building deep sensor-domain expertise and guiding others toward optimal solutions. **You will:** - Design, develop, optimize, and maintain low-latency, robust device drivers and software pipelines for Camera, LiDAR, Radar, IMU, GNSS, Microphones, and other autonomous vehicle sensors and actuators. - Develop and optimize algorithms for timestamping, filtering, and preprocessing sensor data to remove noise, false detections, and artifacts before providing synchronized data to perception and localization. - Build and maintain data analysis pipelines to monitor sensor health, detect out-of-spec behavior early, and identify performance bottlenecks. - Write userspace C++ and Python software for embedded Linux computers in our vehicles. - Collaborate with cross-functional teams (embedded, perception, localization) to integrate sensors into the overall autonomous vehicle platform and debug hardware/software issues. - Grow into and act as an expert in the sensor domain (technical characteristics, parameters, principles of operation, and application nuances). - Write and maintain C++ software that reads, timestamps, and validates data from cameras, LiDARs, radars, IMUs, and GNSS receivers. - Bring new sensors and computers into the software stack (on the bench and on the vehicle). - Find and fix issues spanning software, network, and hardware (e.g., dropped packets, wrong timestamps, devices that stop sending). - Write tools and tests in Python to check sensor data and help other teams debug. - Participate in the team’s support rotation and work with perception, localization, firmware, and hardware teams. **Required qualifications** - Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in CS, Robotics, EE, Math, Physics, or related STEM field (or equivalent experience). - 2+ years of production software development. - Proficiency in modern C++ and Python. - Experience running software on real hardware (robots, vehicles, drones, or embedded devices). - Everyday Linux experience, including basic networking (IP addresses, TCP/UDP, sockets). - Strong problem-solving and debugging skills. - Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. - 1+ year of professional C++ development (modern C++: RAII, smart pointers, STL containers, threads). - Daily Linux usage (command line, building/debugging, basic networking). - Experience with software that communicates with hardware (work, research lab, or serious projects/competitions). - Working knowledge of Python for scripts and data checks. - Ability to work on-site in Austin five days a week (hardware-focused role). **Bonus qualifications** - Debugging network-related issues (Wireshark, tcpdump, ethtool). - Understanding of automotive sensors (GMSL/FPD-Link cameras, LiDAR, Radar, IMU, GNSS) including operation, pros/cons, limitations, and calibration. - Familiarity with ROS (or similar frameworks) and related communication protocols. - Experie
