**Data Science Extern — BetterHelp** ## Who are we and why should you join us? BetterHelp is seeking a Data Science Extern to help scale our impact. You’ll use data to drive insight into product and business—especially through analyzing large, complex datasets related to web products. Expect plenty of data wrangling and post-hoc analysis to support product improvements, marketing efficiency, and business decisions. ## What will you do? - **Language Model Optimization:** Refine and enhance language models, including fine-tuning and retraining to meet specific requirements. - **Cross-Functional Collaboration:** Partner with product and development teams to conceptualize and design ML models and algorithms for our products. - **Product Enhancement Partnership:** Work with product managers to initiate and implement strategies that improve product functionality and user experience. - **Data Handling Expertise:** Manage, analyze, and derive insights from large text datasets. - **Coding for Production:** Build and maintain production-ready code; collaborate with DevOps and ML-Ops to integrate ML models into production. - **Database Proficiency:** Write and optimize SQL queries to interact with and manipulate databases. - **Team Dynamics and Impact:** Thrive in a team environment and help build a world-class product that significantly impacts people’s lives. ## What will you NOT do? - You won’t worry about runway/cash left—BetterHelp is fully backed and funded. - You won’t be confined to a narrow role—you’ll get involved across product, marketing, and business strategy. - You won’t deal with office politics or ego—only positive, collaborative people. - You won’t burn out—we support a sustainable work/life balance. ## Can I work remotely? Yes. We operate on **PST**, and candidates in any time zone are welcome. We ask employees to travel to our **San Jose, CA** office up to **three times per year**, plus one company-wide offsite. Travel expenses are covered, and accommodations are available for those who can’t travel. ## Requirements - Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a **PhD** program in a quantitative discipline (e.g., CS/Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Engineering) - Coursework in **NLP and LLMs** - Deep understanding of **neural networks**, **deep learning**, and **generative AI** - Familiarity with **reinforcement learning** - Experience building **predictive models** and **causal inference models** - Familiarity with **generative AI** - Experience analyzing large and complex datasets - Experience with tools like **PyTorch** (preferred) or **TensorFlow** - Excellent communication skills—able to simplify complex topics for non-technical audiences ## Benefits - Remote work with regular in-person bonding experiences sponsored by the company - Competitive compensatio
