About this role
## About Render Render is building the modern cloud platform for developers creating AI-native, full-stack, multi-service applications. Their mission is to remove the tradeoff between hyperscaler power and developer-friendly simplicity—so teams can ship fast, scale reliably, and focus on product instead of infrastructure. ## Role: Engineering Manager, Trust & Safety (Security) Render is seeking an **Engineering Manager** to lead **Trust & Safety** within the **Security** team. You’ll help keep Render a trusted place to build and run applications by preventing fraud and abuse, protecting customers from malicious activity, and making it harder for attackers to use the platform. You’ll lead engineers building and operating systems including **detection pipelines, investigation tools, automated enforcement, and protections across the customer lifecycle**. You’ll combine people leadership with technical judgment—responding effectively to incidents while investing in systems that prevent recurring problems. ## What You’ll Do - **Lead and grow** the Trust & Safety engineering team (hiring, mentorship, feedback, performance management, career development). - **Define the team roadmap**, balancing investigations and operational needs with long-term prevention, automation, and platform protections. - Guide design and delivery of systems to detect **phishing, malicious workloads, payment fraud, and other platform abuse**. - Build **investigation and enforcement tooling** to help responders act quickly, document decisions, and support consistent handling of escalations and appeals. - Lead response to **significant fraud and abuse incidents**, coordinating with other Security teams and partners across the company. - Establish **sustainable on-call and response practices** (ownership, runbooks, escalation paths, and incident learning). - Partner with Product and Engineering to introduce protections at the right points in the customer lifecycle—balancing prevention with onboarding friction and false positives. - Translate knowledge of attacker behavior and recurring abuse campaigns into improvements that reduce repeat incidents. - Define and use metrics for **fraud losses, detection/response time, false positives, repeat abuse, and operational workload**. ## What We’re Looking For - **5+ years** managing and developing engineers (hiring, coaching, performance management, building inclusive teams). - Strong background in **software and security engineering**; ability to guide system design and make pragmatic architectural tradeoffs. - Experience building/operating systems for **fraud prevention, abuse detection, Trust & Safety, or adversarial security**. - Experience leading teams with **on-call and incident response** responsibilities; sound judgment under incomplete information. - Ability to translate ambiguous threats and business needs into clear priorities, milestones, and shipped improvements. - Experience using **data** to evaluate detection quality and operational problems, and measure intervention effectiveness. - Clear communication and collaboration across technical and business partners; ability to explain risks and tradeoffs. - Empathy for customers and responders, high integrity, and strong ownership for team outcomes and long-term system health. ## Nice-to-Haves - Experience with **cloud infrastructure** and developer platforms, especially those running customer-controlled code/workloads. - Experience addressing **payment fraud, phi
