Through services like **JSTOR**, **Portico**, and **Ithaka S+R**, we help people learn, grow, and overcome barriers to education—while building a culture where everyone can thrive. ## Level Depending on experience, ITHAKA is open to considering candidates at: - **Mid-Level, Software Engineer** (2+ years) - Strong technical skills and adaptability; growth toward leadership or more autonomous roles - Hands-on contributions and learning through collaboration - **Senior-level, Senior Software Engineer** (5+ years) - High autonomy; ownership of complex initiatives and driving innovation - Mentors junior engineers and helps shape strategic goals and scalable workflows ## The Role ITHAKA is looking for a **Mid/Senior Software Engineer (Frontend Focus)** to join the **JSTOR Stewardship** team. You’ll build **modern, user-centered web applications** that help millions of learners, educators, and librarians discover and engage with JSTOR content. While your primary expertise is frontend engineering, you’ll lead complex technical initiatives across multiple features or systems—owning work from **discovery and technical design** through **deployment, experimentation, and production operations**. You’ll collaborate with **Product, Design, User Research, Data Science, and Engineering** to solve meaningful user problems and continuously improve products through **experimentation, analytics, and AI-assisted capabilities**. ## Responsibilities - Design, build, test, deploy, monitor, and maintain **production-grade web applications** - Develop intuitive, performant, reliable, and **accessible** user interfaces with strong UX focus - Build and integrate **APIs and backend services** for end-to-end product experiences - Instrument applications for **analytics, experimentation, and observability** - Collaborate cross-functionally to identify user problems, validate solutions, and iterate with evidence - Contribute to technical documentation and design artifacts - Use product, operational, and engineering metrics to improve product quality and engineering effectiveness - Participate in an **on-call rotation** supporting production systems - **Occasional travel (<10%)**, primarily to Michigan and New York offices ### Additional responsibilities (Senior level) - Provide hands-on technical leadership for complex initiatives (discovery → production) - Guide technical design and architecture decisions to improve scalability, maintainability, reliability, and developer experience - Identify technical debt, operational risks, and opportunities to improve engineering practices - Mentor engineers via code reviews, technical design discussions, pair programming, and day-to-day collaboration ## Experience & Skills You don’t need experience with every listed technology—ITHAKA is seeking engineers with strong fundamentals, product thinking, sound judgment, and ownership. - Experience building production web apps with **React, Vue, or similar**, using **TypeScript**, modern **HTML/CSS**, and component-based architecture - Strong frontend skills: **responsive design, accessibility, performance, maintainable architecture** - Experience integrating frontend apps with **REST or GraphQL** - Ability to contribute to **GraphQL services** and **AWS Lambda** functions using **Node.js, Python,
