About this role
**Senior Software Engineer, Tooling — Docker (Remote-first)** **About Docker** Docker is a developer tooling platform trusted by **20M+ monthly users** and **20B+ container image pulls**. Docker helps developers **build, share, and run** applications across products like **Docker Desktop, Docker Hub, and Docker Scout**. The team is **globally distributed and remote-first**, building the tools that define how software gets built and delivered—especially as **AI agents** reshape development. **The Role** Docker’s **Platform Engineering** team builds and operates the cloud-native platform behind Docker’s products. You’ll help create a **common foundation** for internal applications and build the **custom tools** the business needs on top. You will build an **internal app framework** that supports tools such as **Slack bots, web apps, and workflows**, with **authentication, hosting, observability, and alerting** built in. You’ll also work with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., **HR, Finance, Marketing, Customer Support**) to deliver tools for **roadmapping, headcount management, and business reporting**. This is a **hands-on** role owning projects from **scoping through rollout and adoption**. --- ## What You’ll Do **Internal App Framework** - Build and maintain a framework to quickly create and deploy internal applications/services - Provide defaults for **authentication, hosting, CI/CD, logging, observability, and alerting** - Create **templates, documentation, and examples** so teams can ship without starting from scratch - Set standards for how internal apps are **built, secured, and run** (and make the standard path the easiest) - Leverage existing systems/sources of truth to create cross-connects **Custom Business Tooling** - Identify gaps in tools/processes/systems and turn them into proposals - Scope and deliver apps/tooling to address those gaps - Ship early, learn from usage, and iterate over time - Own tools through rollout, adoption, and ongoing support **Build, Buy, or Integrate** - Decide whether to **build, buy, or integrate** and recommend with tradeoffs - Connect tools to existing systems (identity, data sources, Slack) - Help shape internal system architecture for consistency and maintainability **Reliability and AI** - Bake in operational basics so internal apps get incident management, **SLOs**, and alerting defaults - Use AI tooling to speed delivery and automate workflows where it adds value --- ## What We’re Looking For **Required** - **6+ years** of software engineering, including shipping internal tools or full-stack web apps - Strong full-stack skills (e.g., **Go, Python, or TypeScript** + modern frontend framework) - Experience designing **reusable frameworks/templates/platforms** - Cloud deployment experience (**AWS, GCP, or Azure**) with containers and **CI/CD**, plus working knowledge of **Kubernetes** - Sound judgment on **build vs. buy vs. integrate**, including integrating third-party SaaS/APIs - Experience working directly with **non-engineering stakeholders** - Experience with **AI-assisted development** or **LLM-powered automation** - Clear written communication and comfort working **asynchronously** on a remote team - Bachelor’s degree (CS/Engineering or related) or equivalent practical experience **Nice to Have** - Cross-functional program management experience - Experience with internal tool/developer portal platforms - Web design experience - Familiarity with observability/incident tool
