About this role
**Motional is looking for a Staff Engineer, Team Lead — Core Infrastructure (Core Infra Test & Support Engineering).** Build and lead the team responsible for testing Motional’s software platform and supporting it once it’s running—across test benches, simulation, and the release path. --- ## Mission Summary As the Team Lead, you’ll ensure platform problems are found before they reach the fleet, and that the team responds quickly when issues break in the fleet, on test benches, in simulation, or during releases. You’ll set the plan for stress, fault injection, and regression testing for core platform software, and you’ll pull integration tests from other teams into unified suites. You’ll also establish on-call rotation, triage, and vehicle/release enablement to support customer-facing products and services. --- ## What You’ll Be Doing - **Platform Test:** Own platform-level test suites; combine and improve integration tests from other teams so they run as one suite. Lead release qualification, regression, and bring-up campaigns across **HIL, SIL, and vehicle** setups. - **Production Support:** Own on-call for onboard core software and services supported by the team, including **software deployment** and **vehicle data ingestion**. - **Team Leadership:** Hire and develop the team. Own priorities, performance, and career growth. Stay close to tests and the incident queue to maintain quality, and build leads who can run parts of the work independently. - **Cross-Functional Accountability:** Be the point of contact for platform test results and Core Infra support; partner closely with engineering and operations teams. --- ## What We’re Looking For - **Education:** BS or MS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience. - **Experience:** **10+ years** of software engineering, including leading engineers. Experience should involve software running on **physical hardware** or the infrastructure used to build and operate it (e.g., automotive, robotics, aerospace, device fleets). - **Test or Support Depth:** Owned platform/system-level testing (stress, fault injection, integration suites, release campaigns) and/or production support (on-call, incident triage, postmortems). - **Systems Context:** Strong depth in **embedded software, Linux, middleware**, and/or test & release infrastructure—able to distinguish product defects from bench/test issues and collaborate effectively with owners of those layers. - **Production Operations:** Experience operating software in production on a fleet/field environment, including on-call, bring-up, and releasing software and/or hardware. - **Technical Leadership:** Experience hiring, developing, and retaining engineers; building a team and/or rotation. - **Inclusive Leadership:** Experience building inclusive teams and making room for different working styles, ideas, and backgrounds. --- ## Bonus Points (Not Required) - Functional safety experience in automotive (**ISO 26262** or similar), using test results as verification evidence. - Experience building an on-call and incident program (runbooks, response plans) for a fleet/shared platform. - Hands-on experience with **HIL, SIL, or simulation** infrastructure (running campaigns or writing requirements). - Experience in the autonomous vehicle / robotaxi industry. --- ## Salary Range **$172,000 – $229,000 USD** (base salary estimate; additional compensation may apply). --- **About Motional** Motional is a driverless technology
