About this role
## Cloud - Bare Metal Infrastructure Engineer ### About Render Render is building a modern cloud platform for developers creating AI-native, full-stack, multi-service applications. The mission: remove the tradeoff between hyperscaler power and developer-friendly simplicity—so teams can ship fast, scale reliably, and focus on product instead of infrastructure. Render offers persistent compute, dynamic autoscaling, built-in orchestration, and observability—helping teams launch, scale, and manage real-world applications without writing infrastructure code or managing servers. ### About the role Most infrastructure engineers never get to build a cloud from the metal up. At Render, you will. You’ll help take Render’s first colocation site from an empty cage to production workloads, then scale that foundation as Render expands to thousands of hosts. You’ll join a small, experienced team with real ownership and partner closely with network engineering and the Kubernetes platform team. ### What you’ll do - Take Render’s first colocation site from empty cage to production workloads, then scale as new sites and thousands of hosts come online - Design how servers move from loading dock to production with minimal human touch (netboot, imaging, BMC-driven discovery, host identity) - Partner with network engineering on fleet network needs (out-of-band management to production connectivity) - Build the interface Kubernetes platform teams use to request capacity, view host health, and coordinate maintenance - Own the fleet’s source of truth for hardware, software, and physical environment - Automate the full server lifecycle (burn-in/acceptance, remediation, staged firmware rollout, RMA) - Build automation as a production system with guardrails on destructive actions and designs that survive site-level failure - Shape the technical and operational direction of the bare metal platform (build-vs-buy, operations at thousands of hosts) and help hire the team ### What we’re looking for - Hands-on experience building and operating automation for bare metal fleets in datacenters/colocation - Experience across both sides: physical hardware/colo providers and modern software-driven fleet management - Strong Go or Python; experience designing systems with reconciliation loops and idempotent, failure-tolerant actions - Deep understanding below abstractions; ability to debug when things fail - Experience operating through real failures (bad hardware batches, flapping BMCs, rollouts that must be halted) - Deep Linux knowledge and solid networking fundamentals (DHCP, PXE, DNS, BGP) - Working knowledge of Kubernetes (enough to design the interface between the fleet and clusters) - Clear communication, comfort with ambiguity, and willingness to push back when something doesn’t add up ### Nice-to-haves - Operating bare metal fleets at thousands-of-hosts scale - Experience with early-stage datacenter/bare metal build-outs - Hybrid environments or workload movement between public cloud and owned hardware - DCIM/IPAM tools (NetBox, Nautobot) and/or provisioning stacks (Ironic/Metal3, Tinkerbell, MAAS) - Building reconcilers/state machines for physical infrastructure - Hardware depth (diagnostics, burn-in tooling, firmware, Redfish/IPMI at fleet scale) - Building internal platforms/APIs for other infrastructure teams - Based near colocation sites or able to visit regularly ### Benefits (highlights) - 4 weeks paid vacation - 14 weeks fully paid parental leave for al
