Controls Engineer, Energy Management

About this role
## Controls Engineer, Energy Management ### About Fluidstack Fluidstack exists to make humanity more free. We build and operate civilization-scale AI compute infrastructure—acquiring power, designing and building data centers, and delivering 10 to 100s of GW faster than anyone else. ### How We Operate - **Be a barrel:** Full autonomy. Own things end to end; take on scope without being asked. - **Insane urgency:** Move fast and push everything forward. - **Reason from first principles:** Challenge assumptions; no egos—the best idea wins. - **Love of the game:** High intensity, long hours, and deep focus on frontier AI infrastructure. - **Build something that actually matters:** Work that improves the world. ### Facility Controls Team The Facility Controls team builds the control systems behind Fluidstack data centers, including: - Real-time load control - MEP and behind-the-meter integration - Automated commissioning - Autonomous deployment ### Role Scope You will own the control and data contract between Fluidstack’s facility energy controller and third-party power plant controllers, including: - **Define the interface contract:** objects, fields, units, update rates, and staleness behavior across the boundary. - **Define sequences of operation:** normal operation, generation shortfall, source transitions, blackstart, emergency shed, plus degradation behavior. - **Specify point maps, interlocks, and constraint classes:** ensure vendors build to them and validate through factory and site acceptance. - **Translate between electrical and software:** convert electrical/generation constraints into software requirements—and back into terms vendors and engineers of record can accept. - **Prove interfaces in simulation before energization:** validate constraint classes and mode transitions, then carry the work into automated commissioning. ### What We’re Looking For - Experience with **data protocols** (e.g., MQTT, OPC UA, REST) and the ability to choose appropriately for the job. - Ability to **write and read code** to prototype integrations, test point maps against live devices, and review software output (Python or Go preferred). - Ability to interpret **one-line and panel schedules** and understand protection/breaker/source behavior under faults. - Experience designing **data contracts** (objects/fields/units/update rates/stale-value behavior) and holding both sides to them. - Ability to write a **control narrative** for systems where two controllers must agree, including what happens when they disagree. - Fluency across **controls and software**, translating electrical control requirements into implementable software—and pushing back when designs won’t survive the field. - Ability to challenge vendor scope or internal assumptions with **quantitative reasoning**. **Bonus (nice to have):** - Microgrid and behind-the-meter control (grid-forming BESS, PV plant controllers, turbine/genset dispatch) - Utility/industrial protocols (DNP3, IEC 61850 GOOSE, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus TCP) - Schema-driven contracts (OpenAPI, JSON Schema) - Automated Level 4 and Level 5 commissioning ### Apply Job link: https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/fluidstack/05c2e69c-42f9-4fcb-9cf0-a467aaf98f1c ### Equal Employment Opportunity Fluidstack is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and considers qualified applicants without regard to protected characteristics under applicable law.
