## Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Consumer - Risk) **About Coinbase** Coinbase is remote-first (remote-only is not the model). You’ll collaborate in-person quarterly for intense working sessions called **“surges.”** **Role overview** As a Senior Software Engineer on the **Risk Engineering** team (Consumer & Business group), you’ll build and optimize systems that **detect and prevent fraud**, **manage credit and market risk**, and **protect millions of users** from financial threats in real time at crypto-market scale. You’ll provide technical leadership across end-to-end projects and deliver complex features from inception through production. ### What you’ll do - Lead the design and delivery of complex **risk platform** features end-to-end (architecture → implementation → deployment → monitoring) with stringent requirements for **correctness, performance, and reliability**. - Drive architectural decisions for Coinbase’s **risk detection and mitigation** systems, translating ambiguous business needs into scalable architectures that balance **fraud prevention** with **user experience**. - Partner cross-functionally with **Data Science, ML, Risk Analysts, Product, and Compliance** to build proactive systems (e.g., real-time decisioning engines, model-driven fraud detection) and reactive solutions (e.g., incident response tooling, compliance-driven risk controls). - Build **AI-native risk systems** using fleets of agents to automate complex detection and response workflows and reduce manual intervention. - Strengthen the team through **mentoring**, rigorous **code reviews**, writing technical design docs, and championing engineering best practices. - Own system quality and operational excellence by addressing **technical debt**, driving **bug triaging**, and leading **incident response** and **post-mortems**. ### Required Skills & Experience - **5+ years** of backend software engineering experience delivering complex, high-impact production systems. - Deep proficiency in backend languages such as **Go, Ruby, Python, or Java**, with experience designing **distributed systems** (microservices, event-driven architectures) and **REST/GraphQL APIs**. - Proven ability to translate ambiguous requirements into clear technical plans and architectures, driving technical clarity across engineering, product, and data science. - Track record leading end-to-end projects (scoping, design, implementation, monitoring) and mentoring other engineers. - Experience leading **incident response**, conducting **post-mortems**, and driving measurable operational improvements in high-availability systems. - Ability to use **generative AI responsibly**, maintaining human oversight and delivering business-ready outcomes that improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality. ### Pay Transparency (Base Salary) - **$186,065 USD** (annual base salary range; excluding equity and bonus) ### Notes - **Application limit:** Maximum of **3 applications within a 6-month period**. - **Equal Opportunity Employer:** Coinbase considers qualified applicants regardless of protected characteristics. - **Accommodations:** If you need a reasonable accommodation, email **accommodations[at]coinbase.com**.
