Principal Engineer, Enterprise Scalability (Remote - East Coast Only)
Klaviyo · Boston, MA
About this role
**Principal Engineer, Enterprise Scalability (Remote - East Coast Only)** ## About the role Klaviyo is seeking a senior technical leader to own our approach to **enterprise scalability, performance, reliability, and multi-region readiness**. Reporting to a VP of Engineering, this is a **senior individual contributor role (no direct reports)** where you’ll lead through technical expertise, hands-on engineering, and cross-team influence. ## Your impact - Define what **scale readiness** means with measurable targets (latency, throughput, error rates, capacity) and align teams on service-level objectives and error budgets. - Identify and remove the **most important bottlenecks** using production data, profiling, and reproducible benchmarks. - Drive **architectural change** (sharding, partitioning, caching, back-pressure, workload isolation) and advance **multi-region readiness**. - Make scale engineering **repeatable** with lightweight benchmarks, profiling harnesses, and reusable patterns. - Build readiness into delivery via scalability reviews and **release gates** that surface risks early. - Turn incidents into lasting improvements through deep dives and validated fixes that reduce recurring issues. - Apply **AI where it improves outcomes** (AI-assisted profiling, workload modeling, synthetic traffic, anomaly detection, guided runbooks) with guardrails and measurable impact. - Connect engineering decisions to **customer needs**, communicating priorities, tradeoffs, and results to both engineering and executives. ## What you’ll bring - **12+ years** of relevant engineering experience and a track record of removing major bottlenecks with measurable production impact. - Strong **performance and distributed systems** expertise (capacity planning, sharding/partitioning, caching, back-pressure, tenant isolation, multi-region architectures, large-scale migrations). - Ability to diagnose unfamiliar systems, test hypotheses, write production code, and roll out changes safely with service owners. - Sound technical judgment and leadership across organizational boundaries. - Clear communication with both technical and executive audiences. - Practical **AI fluency**, including evaluating usefulness, limitations, and operational risks. ## Success in 6–12 months - A company-wide **scale scorecard** is adopted with agreed targets and clear ownership. - **2–3 high-impact bottlenecks** removed with reproducible benchmarks showing sustained improvements. - Measurable improvements for largest customer workloads (tail latency, throughput, error rates). - Multi-region readiness and high-volume migration plans with clear priorities and tested assumptions. - Shared benchmarks/readiness checks reduce regressions and **P0 incidents decline**. - AI-assisted tools demonstrate measurable value with appropriate controls and observability. --- *Note: This role may require up to **10% travel** for onboarding, client/partner work (if applicable), team meetings, and industry events. Travel is coordinated in advance.*
