## About the Team OpenAI’s Hardware organization develops AI-native silicon and system-level solutions for advanced AI workloads. Building on efforts like **Jalapeño** (our custom silicon program), the team works across silicon architecture, RTL design, verification, physical design, systems software, and infrastructure to deliver highly performant, efficient, and scalable hardware solutions. The **Silicon & Systems** team brings together hardware and software engineers to co-design and build the next generation of AI infrastructure—operating at the intersection of silicon, systems, and software across the full hardware development lifecycle. --- ## About the Role We’re looking for an **Infrastructure Software Engineer** to build and scale the infrastructure and developer workflows that power OpenAI’s custom silicon development. You’ll partner with engineering teams across **design verification, physical design, emulation, formal verification, and systems software** to develop reliable, automated, and efficient workflows that accelerate hardware development. In this role, you’ll own and improve: - **Cloud infrastructure** - **High-performance computing (HPC) environments** - **CI/CD pipelines** - **Regression systems** - **Data platforms** supporting silicon engineering teams You’ll translate complex hardware development requirements into scalable infrastructure solutions—reducing manual overhead, improving reliability, and enabling faster iteration. --- ## What You’ll Do - **Build developer tools and workflows**: Automate engineering processes with tooling, services, and APIs. - **Develop and scale regression infrastructure**: Design and operate large-scale regression systems (scheduling, execution, results, triage, reporting) with performance, reliability, and reproducibility in mind. - **Own CI/CD infrastructure**: Build and maintain automated pipelines for infrastructure, developer tooling, and cluster configurations. - **Scale cloud and HPC environments**: Provision and operate compute clusters, optimizing scheduling, capacity, reliability, and cost. - **Build data infrastructure and observability**: Create data pipelines, databases, and monitoring for regression results and infrastructure health. - **Drive platform reliability and operational excellence**: Troubleshoot complex issues, improve monitoring/alerting, and automate recovery. - **Collaborate across hardware and software teams**: Continuously improve the infrastructure supporting RTL, verification, physical design, emulation, and software. --- ## You Might Thrive If You Have - Strong **software engineering fundamentals** (e.g., **Python**) and experience building automation/tools/infrastructure services. - Deep expertise in one or more infrastructure domains (e.g., **Linux/HPC**, cloud infrastructure, **CI/CD**, storage, networking, or EDA workflows). - Experience designing, deploying, and operating cloud infrastructure—**Azure preferred**—with **Terraform** or **Bicep**. - Strong **Linux systems** knowledge (processes, filesystems, networking, permissions, performance troubleshooting, administration). - Experience with CI/CD tools such as **Jenkins**, **Buildkite**, **GitHub Actions**, or similar. - Ability to debug complex distributed infrastructure problems and implement durable solutions. - Comfort owning systems end-to-end (design → implementation → deployment → monitoring → ongoing improvements). - Interest in hardware development and expanding impact acro
