About this role
**Senior Staff Applied Scientist, Science Platform (Reddit)** Reddit is a community of communities—built on shared interests, passion, and trust. With 100,000+ active communities and ~130M daily active unique visitors, Reddit is one of the internet’s largest sources of information. The Data Science Platform team builds tools that enable scientific understanding of Reddit. You’ll help develop Reddit’s analytics agent and the shared scientific capabilities and methods that allow data scientists and business partners to answer increasingly sophisticated questions. --- ## What you’ll do - Define the scientific roadmap for Data Science Platform across **agentic analytics, causal inference, and forecasting**. - Research, evaluate, and implement emerging methods—moving from papers to prototypes to production. - Design and build the analytics agent’s architecture: question decomposition, method selection, data/tool use, assumption checks, and reproducible outputs. - Build reusable **causal inference** tools for estimating effects of product changes, policies, and business decisions using observational data. - Develop shared **forecasting** capabilities for business and product metrics (probabilistic predictions, hierarchical forecasts, scenario analysis). - Create evaluation frameworks for agent-generated analyses (benchmarks, simulations, automated checks to detect methodological errors and misleading interpretations). - Own production implementation of scientific methods with robust **Python** and partner on libraries, APIs, data pipelines, observability, and system design. - Translate recurring analytical needs into platform capabilities, documentation, and workflows. - Influence technical and organizational strategy through clear scientific recommendations; mentor scientists and engineers. --- ## Required qualifications - **PhD** in Statistics, Economics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, or related field (or **Master’s** with comparable depth). - 8+ years relevant industry work after a doctorate (or 10+ years with a master’s) in applied science/data science/scientific software development. - Deep knowledge of statistical inference and econometrics, including causal methods for observational data and evaluation of credibility assumptions. - Experience building/deploying forecasting systems (time series modeling, temporal validation, prediction intervals, performance under changing conditions). - Strong software engineering skills, including substantial production **Python** experience; familiarity with API design, automated testing, code review, version control, and operational monitoring. - Ability to critically assess scientific literature, reproduce findings, and turn methods into reliable software. - Experience developing **LLM applications/analytical agents** (tool use, code execution, systematic evaluation). - Clear communication of statistical assumptions, uncertainty, and tradeoffs to business audiences. - Ability to mentor contributors and collaborate across organizational boundaries. - Ability to make progress on ambiguous problems and deliver useful capabilities through rapid iteration. --- ## Preferred qualifications - Publications, open-source contributions, or widely adopted internal tools in agentic analytics, causal inference, forecasting, or related areas. - Experience building scientific libraries/platforms used by other data scientists. - Experience building agents at scale that perform s
