About this role

## Staff Software Engineer — Builder Platform ### Role Summary Join our Builder Platform Team as a **Staff Software Engineer**. Our mission is to empower a company of builders by delivering a **frictionless, standardized, and governed platform** for agents, workflows, and core engineering tools. We operate **Temporal as customer zero**—partnering directly with teams to run real work on the platform, measure productivity gains, and feed learnings back into **Temporal’s products and open-source frameworks**. ### What You’ll Do - Own the **strategy, architecture, and operation** of our **Agent Platform** for deploying, running, evaluating, governing, and improving agents and agentic workflows—ensuring **reliability and scalability**. - Architect the **AI Infrastructure** agents depend on: **LLM and MCP gateways** with guardrails, fallback, usage and cost controls, and model rollout policies. - Design, build, and operate agents and workflows that move engineering work **from issue to production** and business work **from trigger to outcome**, scaling across teams and use cases. - Lead the development and evolution of **Developer Infrastructure** (Source Control and CI) and developer tools that improve builder flow and reduce friction. - Partner with stakeholders across **Engineering, Product, Sales, and G&A** to identify high-impact opportunities where AI can accelerate work and improve outcomes. - Define **best practices** for agents and agentic tooling; create enablement materials and “paved roads,” and proactively drive adoption. - Establish measurement and feedback loops (**usage, reliability, and cost**) to quantify productivity impact, inform prioritization, and shape the roadmap. - Lead as **customer zero**: turn learnings into validated requirements for **Temporal Cloud**, the **SDKs**, and the **Agent Harness**; own the feedback loop with product leadership; and drive contributions to an **open-source reference architecture**. - Mentor and support engineers to raise the bar on technical design, execution, and use of agents and agentic tooling. - Participate in an **on-call rotation**, while identifying and driving improvements that reduce operational burden and improve internal user experience. ### What You’ll Bring - Strong software engineering fundamentals and a track record leading the design, delivery, and operation of **production-quality internal platforms** or **developer tooling**. - Experience with modern agentic coding tools such as **Codex** and **Claude Code**, including defining best practices and driving adoption. - Proficiency in one or more languages commonly used at Temporal—**Go, TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or Java**—with the ability to make pragmatic, high-leverage technical decisions. - Experience architecting and scaling **workflow automation** or internal tools (e.g., CLI tools, services, GitHub automation, cloud automation) used across teams. - Strong judgment on when to **standardize vs. enable flexibility**, removing friction without compromising **reliability, security, or maintainability**. - Comfort leading cross-functional collaboration, translating ambiguous needs into **scalable, well-adopted solutions**. - Ability to use data and qualitative feedback to guide decisions and improvements.
