About this role
## Member of Technical Staff (Backend, Rust) ### About Footprint Footprint is an agentic platform that learns your compliance program and runs it end to end. Compliance teams at banks and fintechs are drowning in financial crimes investigations—Percy, our agentic system, learns each team’s procedures and makes the same calls their analysts would: clearing false positives, escalating real risk, writing the case narrative, and documenting every decision for audit. It cuts review workloads by **70%+** and builds an organizational “memory” so patterns discovered by one analyst surface automatically later—across **KYC, EDD, sanctions, and monitoring**. Backed by **QED, Index, and Box Group** and trusted by **FDIC- and OCC-regulated banks** plus fintechs like **Bilt, Nuvei, and MoonPay**. We **5x’d revenue** last year. ### The Role For four years, Footprint’s backend has answered one question: **should this company onboard this user?** Clear cases were automated; ambiguous ones went to humans who handled cases manually—where the fraud worth catching tends to be. Now, Percy targets that queue with an agent that can do more in review than a person can—**faster**. You’ll span both worlds: the platform financial services run on today and the agentic products built on top of it. You’ll report directly to the **Head of Engineering (Elliott Forde)**. --- ## What You’ll Own - **API and service design (Rust):** Build the Rust APIs and services powering verification, vaulting, and the checks Percy runs to investigate users for fraud. - These are customer-facing surfaces—design decisions are hard to take back. - Own end-to-end product areas: **data model, architectural calls, deployment**. - Take features from ideation through production with design and frontend. - Participate in planning conversations that decide what gets built. - Deliver systems that hold up to scrutiny from **customers, auditors, and security teams**. - **Agent-shaped work:** Percy’s investigation services are newer and still evolving. - Help define what “excellence” looks like here. --- ## Tech Stack **Rust, Python, Postgres, Pulumi, AWS** --- ## Must-Have - **4+ years** designing, building, and operating backend systems under real load (including debugging when they broke) - Shipped and operated an **API** that other teams (or external engineers) build against, including handling compatibility when it changed - **Privacy, security, and trust** show up in your first design sketch - Clear reasoning about tradeoffs and a habit of chasing failure modes others call unlikely - Owned a production service, including being the person paged for it - You can **concede your own design** to a better one and still ship --- ## Nice-to-Have - Production **Rust** or deep systems experience + a real desire to learn Rust (backend is Rust) - Background in real-world **cryptography** or **systems security** (identity data vaulting for banks/fintechs) - Experience designing **APIs/SDKs** used by external developers - Familiarity with **KYC** and identity verification --- ## Success Metrics - **90 Days:** Own a product area and ship to the APIs customers integrate (e.g., agent memory, self-improving agents, or new verification capabilities) - **1 Year:** Architect and deliver a major platform capability; actively shape what and how the team builds; raise engineering standards --- ## Why Join Footprint - **Massive impact, fast:** shape company direction - **Own meaningful wo
