Software Engineer, Energy Management
Fluidstack · Austin, TX
About this role
**ABOUT FLUIDSTACK** Fluidstack exists to make humanity more free. We’re building civilization-scale infrastructure for AI—acquiring power, designing and operating data centers, and delivering **10 to 100s of GW of compute faster** than anyone else. **HOW WE OPERATE** - **Be a barrel:** Full autonomy. Own things end to end. - **Insane urgency:** Move fast and keep pushing. - **Reason from first principles:** Challenge assumptions; best idea wins. - **Love of the game:** High intensity, long hours, frontier problems. - **Build something that actually matters:** Spend time on world-impacting work. --- **THE FACILITY CONTROLS TEAM** The Facility Controls team builds the control systems behind Fluidstack’s data centers, including: - Real-time load control - MEP and behind-the-meter integration - Automated commissioning - Autonomous deployment **Examples of key problems** - Deliver controls behind **gigawatt-scale** data centers this decade - Own **real-time load control** and **MEP/behind-the-meter** integration - Automate **Level 4 and Level 5 commissioning** - Drive **autonomous, robotic deployment** --- **ROLE SCOPE** You’ll build and own the facility side of the energy control contract, including: - **Protocol layer, gateway service, and API** used by third-party plant controllers - A **messaging + state layer** that computes facility load intent from live telemetry and publishes it every second (with a forecast) - **Data contracts and engineering standards** so other teams can build reliably as new sites/counterparties come online - The **constraint execution path**: answer requests with what the facility can achieve and by when (deadlines measured in seconds) - **Observability** to prove conformance in production (latency, staleness, watchdog health) so missed budgets are visible before incidents --- **WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR** - Experience with **high-throughput messaging systems** (NATS, Kafka, or equivalent) and understanding failure modes - Designed **time-series data models** in ClickHouse, TimescaleDB, or similar; understand write/query/schema evolution tradeoffs - Instrumented production services with **observability tooling** (Prometheus, Grafana, or equivalent); treat metrics/alerting as part of shipping - Built and owned production services other teams depend on; code you’d be comfortable supporting at 3am - Strong design instincts: can explain patterns, alternatives, and deliberate refactors - Ability to draw boundaries (interfaces/modules/failure domains) so failures degrade gracefully - Worked across the full signal chain (device → database) with a focus on **data integrity** and correct handling of stale vs wrong data - Can move toward broken pipelines in production with urgency and without drama **Bonus (stack / domain familiarity)** - Go, NATS, Redis - DNP3, Modbus TCP, OPC UA - Kubernetes, ArgoCD - SCADA/EMS/power plant controllers - Real-time dashboarding (Grafana or equivalent) --- **APPLY** https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/fluidstack/05c2e69c-42f9-4fcb-9cf0-a467aaf98f1c **EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY** Fluidstack is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer.
