About this role

**Head of Engineering (Red Team) — FAR.AI** **About FAR.AI** FAR.AI is a non-profit AI research institute (http://FAR.AI) working to ensure advanced AI is safe and beneficial for everyone. Our mission is to facilitate breakthrough AI safety research, advance global understanding of AI risks and solutions, and foster a coordinated global response. Since our founding in July 2022, we’ve grown to **50+ staff**, published **40+ academic papers**, and convened leading AI safety events. Our work includes pre-deployment testing for frontier developers and independent evaluations for governments, and we publish the **AI Security Leaderboard** (https://leaderboard.far.ai/) based on our red-teaming expertise. **About Red-Teaming at FAR.AI** Our red team is building toward a simple outcome: **materially raising the bar for safety and security** of the most widely deployed and capable AI systems. We aim to be the tip of the spear in AI safety—consistently finding failures others miss, driving real mitigations, and setting standards that labs and governments converge on. **About the Role** As **Head of Engineering (Red Team)**, you’ll be the senior technical owner of engineering for the FAR.AI Red Team, reporting to **Kellin Pelrine** with a dotted line to **Edward Yee**. You’ll translate broader technical strategy into a world-class engineering organization, building the systems and team that test critical safeguards of next-generation AI models. **What you’ll do** - **Build a scalable red-teaming engine**: tooling, products, services, evals, agents, and a self-improving workflow to multiply output. - Build and scale internal/external red-teaming tools and products to improve speed, coverage, and severity of findings. - Develop agentic red-teaming systems to automatically and systematically explore the attack space. - Build agentic systems to identify new public jailbreaks and other releases, and integrate them into our systems. - Advance attacker simulation and harmfulness evaluation. - Maintain and evolve vulnerability databases, statistical analysis tools, and reporting infrastructure. - **Enable high-stakes engagements** with frontier AI companies and governments. - Support public reports, benchmarks, and leaderboards that shape industry norms. - Contribute to red-teaming of frontier models (closed- and open-weight), improving testing systems and turning insights into system-wide advances. - Build agentic workflows that accelerate the red team broadly. - **Lead and scale an elite engineering team** - Initially manage, mentor, and support a growing team of engineering/red-teaming ICs. - Plan sprints and lead engineering execution. - Mentor ICs (1:1 and via resources) and create processes for high-tempo engagements without sacrificing quality. - Design and help hire pipelines to scale the engineering team. - Identify and execute on technical and team-building opportunities to scale impact. - Partner closely with Kellin where engineering systems, methodology, evaluations, and research intersect. **This role is a great fit if you** - Are energized by **high-stakes, real-world technical work** where success is measured by impact. - Want to work with governments, leading AI companies, and academics (lean org; impact via partnerships). - Enjoy building technical solutions to bottlenecks at high velocity. - Like managing and mentoring an elite, high-performing team. - Are excited to build a team (identify skill gaps,
