About this role

**Embedded Software Engineer, Microcontrollers** **About Base** Base is America’s next-generation power company—rebuilding the foundation of modern civilization by deploying a vast network of distributed batteries that transforms today’s fragile, centralized grid into a resilient and abundant system. **About the Role** As an Embedded Software Engineer on the Embedded MCU team, you’ll own the microcontroller firmware that directly controls Base’s power hardware: batteries, inverters, and disconnect systems in every home we serve. You’ll build bare-metal and RTOS software for control logic, state machines, fault handling, drivers, BSP/HAL, and peripheral configuration—ensuring it runs flawlessly and safely in the field. You’ll also lead bring-up of new boards, create reusable firmware libraries to speed up new product launches, and partner closely with hardware and power electronics engineers at the HW/SW boundary. You’ll design deterministic real-time control and protection within hard timing budgets, own device communications over CAN, and see your firmware deployed across a rapidly growing fleet. --- **What You’ll Do** - Own the business logic on Base microcontrollers: state machines, control/sequencing logic, fault handling, and safety coordination for batteries, inverters, and disconnect systems. - Lead end-to-end hardware bring-up: peripheral configuration, driver development, BSP/HAL integration, and reducing time-to-first-running boards. - Implement and tune deterministic real-time control and protection on multi-core MCUs, partitioning work across cores while meeting strict ISR timing/jitter budgets. - Build and maintain the device communications stack: CAN/CAN-FD drivers, buffering, transport reliability, higher-level protocols, and firmware update flows. - Serve as the primary software interface to Hardware Engineering (schematic reviews, processor/peripheral/pin/timing input, and bench debugging of HW/SW integration issues). - Build reusable firmware libraries and coding standards so each new product ships faster than the last. - Take products from prototype through production firmware and into the field using hardware-in-the-loop testing and crash dumps to reduce field-reported issues. --- **What You’ll Bring** - Hands-on experience shipping bare-metal and/or RTOS firmware on modern microcontrollers (e.g., ARM Cortex-M), including taking products to manufacturing. - Deep expertise in C/C++ with clean, modular, defensive code; strong understanding of memory management, ISR-safe patterns, and compiler/runtime behavior. - Comfort reading schematics and datasheets and working directly with hardware/power electronics engineers. - Strong embedded firmware architecture instincts: clear separation of responsibilities, minimal shared state, observability, and safe failure modes. - First-principles mindset and strong root-cause debugging skills that reach down to the hardware. - **Nice to have:** deterministic real-time control/protection on multi-core MCUs with robust fault handling and safe recovery. - **Nice to have:** CAN/CAN-FD and higher-level protocols such as ISO-TP and UDS, including firmware updates over CAN. - **Plus:** familiarity with power electronics, grid-tied inverters, or battery management. --- **About the Team** The Embedded MCU team owns the firmware closest to Base’s hardware—the software running on microcontrollers inside batteries, inverters, and disconnect systems. You’ll bring up every new board, writ
