Engineering Manager – Camera Firmware Platform
Verkada · San Mateo, CA United States
About this role
## Engineering Manager – Camera Firmware Platform ### Who We Are Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, privacy-sensitive, AI-powered platform for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management. We’re building serious momentum in the market—serving 30,000+ customers (including 100+ Fortune 500 companies), with more than $1B in annualized bookings and backing from CapitalG, Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst, Felicis Ventures, Next47, and more. ### About the Team The **Camera Firmware Platform** team owns the foundation that every Verkada camera runs on. While other teams bring new camera categories to market, this team makes every camera in the fleet—existing and future—**more reliable, faster, leaner, and more power-efficient**. Key areas include: - **Edge Storage:** Own the on-camera storage stack for reliable, accessible, secure, and observable video recording—preserving footage across SD cards and raw NAND even during outages or sudden power loss. - **Firmware Platform:** Build the cross-cutting firmware systems underneath every camera feature, including boot/shutdown, memory & power management, system orchestration, IPC, observability, and firmware updates. ### About the Role As **Engineering Manager**, you’ll lead a highly technical team of storage and embedded systems engineers responsible for the **reliability, performance, power, and stability** of firmware running on a fleet of **1.8M+ perpetually online devices**. You’ll set the storage and platform roadmap, prioritize fleet-wide investments, and drive measurable improvements across retention, endurance, boot time, memory headroom, power draw, and crash rates. This role is **onsite** at our HQ in **San Mateo, CA**. ### What You’ll Do **Lead the team** - Lead and grow a team of storage, firmware, and systems engineers; recruit and retain embedded talent. - Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, career development, and execution management. - Define the technical vision and multi-quarter roadmap for camera storage and firmware platform. - Establish best practices for testing, observability, incident response, root-cause analysis, and long-term maintainability. **Drive storage optimizations** - Own the on-camera storage stack end to end (filesystems like ext4/UBIFS, video layout & indexing, SD/eMMC drivers, raw NAND). - Lead next-generation storage architecture (e.g., new SD card modes, partition-level encryption, secure deletion of expired footage). - Improve reliability/endurance/retention (power-loss integrity, corruption handling, reduced write amplification, smarter capacity allocation, better high vs. low-quality storage). - Build storage observability (health metrics, erase counts, bad blocks, UBI counters, writes/hour, retention metrics for release decisions). - Build hardware-in-the-loop testing for storage disaster cases (retention extremes, OTA transitions, reformats, EEPROM recovery, SD controller updates). - Partner to qualify next-generation storage media. - Guide storage-adjacent backend evolution (retention, cloud backup, archives, storage health notifications; on-prem storage appliances with SMART monitoring). **Drive firmware platform improvements** - Optimize boot/shutdown across boot stack, kernel, services, and backend connection. - Optimize memory, power, and network on resource-constrained devices (reduce DRAM/flash footprint; pre
