**Zscaler — Sr Staff Software Engineer (Layer 7 Security & Proxy)** **About the role** We’re looking for an **Sr Staff Software Development Engineer (Layer 7 Security & Proxy)** to join our **Zero Trust Exchange** team. This is a **hybrid role (minimum 3 days/week in Santa Clara, CA)**, reporting to the **Director, Software Development Engineering**. In this architect role, you’ll provide technical leadership for the **ZIA proxy architecture**, with a strong focus on **advanced Layer 7 protocols** and **SSL inspection**. You’ll help improve production code quality through sound architectural decisions, innovative solutions, and raising the engineering bar—while modernizing the **ZIA codebase** by addressing technical debt, fixing issues, and rewriting components as needed. **What you’ll do** - Support end-to-end **QUIC/HTTP/3** and **HTTP/2** proxy and **TLS/SSL** architecture in **ZIA** - Define and evolve the **ZIA proxy architecture** - Partner with **Product Management** and engineering on solution design, trade-offs, and end-to-end delivery of core **ZIA** functionality - Establish **reference architectures** and **design patterns** for ZIA components and integrations - Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and architectural governance across virtual and product teams **Who you are (success profile)** - Thrive in ambiguity—build the path as you go and turn dynamic environments into meaningful outcomes - Customer-obsessed—build empathy for internal/external users and anchor decisions in real-world problem solving - Driven by innovation—bring deep curiosity to complex technical challenges and seek better, more secure, scalable solutions - Think at scale—connect daily work to the broader mission for a high-growth, global organization - Lead with integrity—hold yourself/others to high accountability standards and build trust through transparent action **Minimum qualifications** - Foundational understanding of **AI/ML** technologies and experience leveraging/securing/positioning AI-driven solutions to optimize outcomes - **8+ years** total experience with proven experience designing and implementing **networking security software** and **public cloud infrastructure** - Deep understanding of **Proxies**, **HTTP/2**, **QUIC**, **TCP/IP**, **TLS/DTLS**, and **SSL proxies** - Proficient in **C** - Demonstrated success designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting **high-throughput, low-latency** network security products - Bachelor’s degree in **Computer Science**, **Information Technology**, or related field **Preferred qualifications** - Proven ability to leverage **AI technologies/workflows** to drive measurable operational efficiency - Mastery of **TCP/IP, DNS, HTTP(s), VPN** technologies (**IPSec, SSL VPN**), **NAT**, and **load balancing** - Knowledge of **BSD/Linux**, virtualization technologies, and **DPDK** (or similar kernel bypass techniques) **Pay transparency (US)** - **Base pay range:** **$180,000 — $225,000 USD** (excluding commission/bonus/equity, if applicable, and benefits) **Benefits & equal opportunity** Zscaler offers comprehensive benefits (including health plans, time off, parental leave options, retirement options, education reimbursement, and in-office perks).
