**Staff Machine Learning Engineer, Compliance Automation (Platform)** Ready to do the most impactful work of your career? Coinbase is remote-first (but not remote-only) and builds AI systems that reimagine how compliance operations run at scale. As a Staff Machine Learning Engineer on the Compliance Automation team within the Platform group, you’ll build agentic AI solutions that automate compliance processes—turning manual work into intelligent, auditable, measurable automation. You’ll own the ML architecture for production compliance agents, guiding technical decisions across model selection, grounding, guardrails, and evaluation—while partnering with Compliance stakeholders to ensure outputs meet regulatory standards. **What you’ll do** - Architect and build production agentic AI systems for compliance automation, including LLM-powered agents, orchestration pipelines, and decision support workflows - Own the ML technical direction for compliance agents (model selection, prompt engineering, grounding strategies, and guardrail design) to ensure outputs are accurate, auditable, and regulatorily defensible - Design and implement evaluation and measurement frameworks to quantify performance, detect hallucinations and drift, and provide required auditability - Partner with Compliance, Legal, and Operations to translate regulatory workflows into automatable technical specifications (full automation vs. human-in-the-loop augmentation) - Mentor engineers on ML system design, LLM application patterns, and responsible AI practices to raise the team’s technical bar **Required skills & experience** - 8+ years in machine learning and software engineering, with experience shipping LLM-based or agentic AI applications to production - Deep expertise in LLM application development (prompt engineering, RAG, grounding, hallucination reduction, agent orchestration) - Proven track record building evaluation/measurement systems for production ML (monitoring drift, accuracy degradation, and output quality at scale) - Strong Python proficiency and hands-on experience with GenAI frameworks and ML infrastructure (e.g., LangChain, vector databases, Airflow, Spark, or equivalent) - Experience in compliance, regulatory tech, financial crimes, or similarly regulated domains where auditability, explainability, and correctness matter - Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and measurable improvements in efficiency, cost, and quality **Pay transparency (annual base salary range, excluding equity/bonus)** - **$218,025 – $256,500 USD** **Additional notes** - Application limit: maximum of **3 applications within a 6-month period** - Coinbase is an **Equal Opportunity Employer** - Accommodations: if you need a reasonable accommodation, email **accommodations[at]coinbase.com** - Data privacy & arbitration: submission agrees to Coinbase candidate privacy notice and (for US applicants) arbitration of disputes
