About this role
## Product Design Engineer — C1.ai **About the role** C1.ai is building a **horizontal identity platform**—the control plane for modern companies. If an app or system has a concept of **“who”**, it should be able to connect to C1. This is not a traditional design handoff role. You’ll **design and ship**—often in the same session—using an **AI-native, code-forward workflow**. --- ## What you’ll do - **Design and build** product experiences end-to-end (problem framing → working implementation). - Work daily across a modern **AI-native toolkit** (agentic coding harnesses, design tools like Paper/Pen.dev, prototyping tools, and MCP integrations). - Make design decisions grounded in **data**, using research/specs plus your own signal from usage, support, and customer feedback. - **Contribute to and evolve the design system** as the product surface grows. - **Prototype, validate, and ship UI directly in code** (not as a novelty—your default mode). - Communicate the **why** behind decisions clearly and publicly (designing in the open). - Collaborate closely with **engineering and product** to maintain quality at speed. --- ## You’d be a great fit if you - Build things for fun (side projects/tools/prototypes/experiments). - Are **all-in on AI tooling** and use it to accelerate your work; you have strong opinions and keep experimenting. - Understand that building with AI is **orchestration**, not volume (context management, clear prompts, steering vs. shouting). - Have real product design skill (layout, hierarchy, interaction patterns, systems thinking), even if your recent work leans more code. - Have **solid Figma experience** (not primary, but you’re fluent). - Can navigate ambiguity: frame a vague problem and start building toward an answer. - Understand technical constraints well enough to balance design quality with pragmatic shipping. - Have experience building/contributing to **design systems**. - Communicate clearly (written, verbal, visual) and share work early/often. - Are curious about the frontier of **design + AI** and how workflows are evolving. --- ## Extra credit - Experience with **identity, security, or infrastructure** products. - Familiarity with **React, TypeScript, and modern CSS frameworks**. - Experience with **code-native design tools** (Paper/Pen.dev) or building your own agent workflows. --- ## Hiring philosophy They value **excellence and grit**—you don’t need to check every box to apply. **Equal Opportunity Employer:** C1.ai considers all qualified applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
