Headway is building a new mental healthcare system by solving the biggest barrier to care—insurance—then expanding into a full platform where care actually happens. Headway is a Series D company with **$325M+** in funding and serves **90,000+ providers** across all 50 states and **2.6M+ patients**. --- ### The Work (Backend) You’ll build reliable, high-stakes backend systems that sit on top of a fragmented healthcare ecosystem. **What you could work on:** - **Modern AI-enabled Clinical System**: Store and manage clinical data with high integrity (treatment plans, progress notes, patient history) and AI-powered clinical intelligence (e.g., transcript-to-note generation, automated summaries). - **Insurance Billing Engine**: Scale systems that handle complex payer rules to accurately estimate and file claims **hundreds of thousands of times per month**. - **Patient-First Infrastructure**: Build backend services for personalized care recommendations, health tracking, longitudinal data views, and patient experiences for finding the right therapist. - **Financial Integrity**: Build ledger systems to ensure **70,000+ providers** get paid accurately, with idempotency and strict consistency in a multi-party marketplace. **Stack** - **Languages**: Python, TypeScript - **Storage**: Postgres, Redis, Snowflake - **Infrastructure**: AWS, Temporal - **Ops**: Datadog, Sentry, PagerDuty - **AI Tools**: Cursor, Claude, Gemini, Eddy (in-house cloud agent harness) --- ### Who You Are - **Owns outcomes, not tasks**: Turn ambiguous problems into shipped software; align across teams and adapt as priorities shift. - **Sets the technical standard**: Optimize for maintainability and scale; improve engineering velocity through tooling, automation, and bug-prevention patterns. - **Mentor by default**: Pull engineers into design discussions; code reviews teach; knowledge sharing is proactive. - **Ships fast, iterates faster**: Prefer a strong v1 quickly, then improve with real feedback. - **Quick study in complex domains**: Healthcare complexity is a plus-you-don’t-need prior experience, but you must build a working mental model fast. - **Motivated by impact**: You want your skills applied to meaningful problems. - **Communicates with precision**: Clear, concise communication across Slack, docs, and cross-team meetings. - **AI frontier tinkerer**: Experiment with LLMs in real workflows and ship responsibly in healthcare. --- ### Interview Process - **Initial screen**: Recruiting conversation to learn about the team and your background. - **First round**: Live coding with an engineer. - **Final rounds**: Additional technical and non-technical interviews. - **References & offer**: Details including equity and next steps. --- ### Compensation & Benefits - **Salary**: **$182,750 – $278,500** base + competitive equity - **Benefits**: Medical, dental, vision, HSA/FSA, 401(k), Carrot Fertility reimbursement, **16-week parental leave** - **Therapy reimbursement** + **professional development budget** - **Time off**: 13 holidays, full week off in December, flexible PTO --- ### Inclusion & Safety Notes Headway is committed to full inclusion and provides reasonable accommodations for applicants with disabilities. **Security / anti-fraud note:** Hea
