About this role
## Senior Software Engineer (Full-Time) — Remote **Compensation:** $180,000/year ### About EducationSuperHighway EducationSuperHighway (ESH) is a national non-profit that connected **99.7% of American students** to high-speed internet and **5 million low-income households** to affordable broadband. ESH is now launching its **3.0 mission**: ending America’s K-12 reading crisis by funding **literacy tutoring scholarships** for first graders who are reading below grade level. Beginning in **2027**, the **Federal Scholarship Tax Credit (FSTC, §25F)** creates a new mechanism for employers to offer education philanthropy as a workplace benefit. ESH is building the infrastructure to connect **employers, employees, and payroll systems** into a seamless giving experience—tracking every payroll deduction through to the scholarship granting organization that receives it. ### About the Role Join ESH’s **small engineering team** on the product, working directly with the engineer who designed the platform. This is an **active build** ahead of the **January 1, 2027** launch. The platform’s core architecture includes: - Automated + manually-supported **payroll provider integrations** - **Multi-tenant giving** architecture (multiple downstream recipients per employer) - **Money movement and reconciliation** via a bank-sponsored payments provider - **Employer single sign-on** - **Compliance checks** against the IRS list of eligible scholarship granting organizations - A growing set of **live and in-progress employer implementations** This engagement starts as a **contract role** with a strong path to **full-time conversion** for the right person. ### What You’ll Do - Extend an **API-first full-stack platform** connecting employers, employees, and payroll systems toward launch - Work on integrations with payroll/HRIS providers (starting with **ADP Workforce Now** via Finch; then **Dayforce, Workday, UKG** next) - Support both **automated sync/write-back** and **manually-supported** implementation paths - Build **direct integrations** for providers an aggregator can’t reach (starting with **Rippling**) - Handle assisted provider connections by treating pending deductions as possibly already applied - Maintain and extend a **provider-agnostic integration layer** so new providers don’t require rebuilding the core platform - Build and refine: - **Employee-facing enrollment flows** - **Employer-facing campaign and dashboard tooling** (multi-employer, multi-recipient) - Employer SSO (OIDC, SAML 2.0, or email-code fallback) - IRS eligibility checks at designation and at every deduction - Capture employee state at payment - Design reliable **background job pipelines** with: - status tracking, retry logic, dead-letter handling, and operational visibility - webhook ingestion and drift detection between payroll systems and the platform - Support **money movement and reconciliation** with ESH finance procedures and a payments/ledgering provider (e.g., Modern Treasury) - Match payroll deduction files with ACH remittances - Maintain an auditable trail - Build **compliance-aware document workflows** (e.g., year-end acknowledgement generation/delivery) - Track delivery status and recover from failures - Handle sensitive **PII and financial data** with appropriate security practices (including data minimization and hashing identifiers) - Make sound architecture decisions under ambiguity and document them clearly ### What We’re Looking For *
