## Pelago — Product Engineer, Platform ### Overview Pelago is a specialty substance use care provider built on the belief that effective treatment means matching care intensity to what each member actually needs—not defaulting to the most expensive intervention. Pelago also applies this clinically-driven model to mental health through **Sona**, a voice-first AI Mental Health Specialist. This is a **Platform Engineering** role with a **Product Engineer’s mindset**. You’ll own the foundation that Pelago’s product and data run on—**infrastructure, an event-driven data platform, and the reliability/cost discipline** that keep everything healthy—so your work directly supports reporting, member-facing features, and clinical impact. *Hybrid role: **3 days/week in our NYC office**.* ### How We Work - **Outcome-driven:** Solve meaningful problems; success is measured by learning and impact (not velocity alone). - **AI-native:** Use AI across the SDLC to accelerate implementation, testing, and review—while validating behavior and designing resilient systems. - **High autonomy, high accountability:** Real ownership of domains with responsibility for quality, safety, and results. - **Cross-functional by default:** Partner with Product, Design, Data, and Clinical across discovery, experimentation, and delivery. - **Quality and safety matter:** Reliability, observability, and correctness are first-class in a regulated, member-impacting domain. ### In This Role You Will - **Own Pelago’s event-driven data platform end-to-end:** Build and evolve pipelines that bring data from product, third-party platforms, and external partners into the warehouse—reliably and securely. - **Define and manage Infrastructure as Code + CI/CD:** Make environments reproducible and deployments safe and confident. - **Create a consistent pattern for new data sources/services:** So engineers can add pipelines without reinventing the wheel. - **Design for the “final mile”:** Deliver platform capabilities that support analytics/reporting and power member-facing product features. - **Own observability and alerting:** Detect missing/late/incorrect data and failing services early; handle on-call and incident response. - **Practice frugal architecture:** Treat cost as a design constraint and continuously optimize AWS hosting/data costs without sacrificing reliability. - **Build platform capabilities for agentic workflows:** Enable full-circle support from detection → diagnosis → resolution. - **Partner across teams:** Work with analytics, product, clinical, and commercial teams; clarify ownership boundaries between platform vs. modeling/reporting/feature work. - **Improve Pelago’s engineering system:** AI-native development practices, testing, documentation, knowledge sharing, and review quality. ### The Background We’re Looking For - Strong production experience as a **backend/platform/systems engineer** in a startup or scale-up environment. - Hands-on experience with **Terraform** and **Infrastructure as Code**, plus building/maintaining **CI/CD** pipelines. - Strong **AWS** experience (designing, securing, and operating cloud-native services). - Proficiency in **Python** and **TypeScript (Node)** across backend services, data pipelines, and tooling. - Deep experience with **event-driven architectures** and data platforms (e.g., **Kafka** or AWS-native streaming/messaging), including integrating third-party data sources in production. - Strong instincts for **observability an
