About this role
**Who we are** Atoms is building the machines that power the next era of progress—real-world robots for industries that move civilization forward (starting with food, mining, and transport). We integrate AI, hardware, software, operations, manufacturing, and real estate to deploy, operate, learn from, and improve systems until they work at scale. **About the role** We’re seeking an **AI Research Intern (BS/MS)** to join our founding team and bridge high-level AI research with real-world physical actuation for our next-generation autonomous transport platforms. You’ll contribute to core research initiatives across **Perception, World Models, and Action models**, translating theoretical breakthroughs into scalable deployment on physical autonomous systems. **What you’ll do** - Integrate and adapt emerging AI research into internal model pipelines, validating performance on real-world datasets and simulation. - Prototype and evaluate **RL**, **trajectory planning**, and **distillation** algorithms based on state-of-the-art literature. - Train and fine-tune **multimodal models** mapping real-time sensor inputs and behavioral goals to vehicle actuation. - Experiment with world model architectures using multi-sensor log data to improve simulation fidelity and trajectory querying. - Analyze edge cases and failure modes in novel driving environments to iterate on model performance and stability. - Run rigorous simulation experiments alongside research and validation teams to identify bottlenecks and track improvements. **What we’re looking for** - **Education:** Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in **Computer Science, EECS, Robotics, AI**, or a closely related field. - **Core Expertise (at least one):** - Generative World Models / Video Generation / Diffusion Models - Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models or embodied AI - Reinforcement Learning (RL), trajectory optimization, or decision-making systems - Large-scale multimodal Transformer architectures for robotics or spatio-temporal data - **Framework Fluency:** Advanced hands-on proficiency with **PyTorch** or **JAX**. - **Programming:** Proficiency in **Python** and working knowledge of **C++**. **Preferred qualifications** - Prior research, project, or internship experience in **autonomous driving**, **mobile robotics**, or **spatial AI**. **Why join us** Work on one of the defining challenges of our time: bringing automation into the physical world with real, lasting impact. The work is ambitious and challenging, grounded in purpose and a team committed to seeing it through. **Location & logistics** - Based in **Mountain View** or **San Francisco** office - **Onsite:** five days a week **Compensation** - Hourly pay range: **$70/hr** - Actual compensation determined based on experience, skills, and qualifications **Additional info** - Atoms accepts applications on an ongoing basis. - **#LI-Onsite**
