About this role
## Senior Software Engineer, Backend (AI Platform) ### About Affirm At Affirm, we exist for the moments that matter—giving people a clear, predictable way to pay over time, with no hidden fees, no surprises, and no tradeoffs on what matters most. Affirm’s engineering team builds large-scale, fault-tolerant, global infrastructure shared across multiple financial products, merchants, and vendors. We value blameless postmortems, detailed tech specs, and gathering feedback before large system changes. ### What You’ll Do - Plan, execute, and own technical decisions and projects within the AI Platform team, from design through launch and on-call. - Design and build the gateway, runtime, and evaluation services that take AI workloads from pilot to production—securely scaling across millions of users and their transactions. - Make AI spend attributable and governable by building identity, quota, routing, caching, and failover controls so teams can adopt new models and tools without re-solving platform problems. - Partner with security, infrastructure, and product engineering teams to set guardrails for agentic workloads and the “on-behalf-of” identity model for tool access. - Create and monitor metrics, and own operational health: monitoring, alerting, runbooks, and on-call. - Set and improve code review and design standards, and advocate for them beyond your team through writing and tech talks. - Use AI tools and agentic workflows daily to multiply your code, design review, and operations—and push what a small AI-native team can deliver. - Educate, mentor, and grow engineers in the team, driving best practices around design, coding, and testing. ### What We Look For - 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin. - Track record building highly available distributed systems using AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes. - Practical production experience with LLMs/agents/AI frameworks (e.g., inference APIs, LLM gateways like LiteLLM, MCP, tool calling, evals, or agent runtimes). - Understanding of AI usage and the infrastructure needed to support AI workloads across disciplines. - Ability to define a technical plan for delivering significant features/systems with an elegant, simple, extensible design; write high-quality code that others can easily understand and use. - Experience making significant changes in a large codebase, with tools and practices that enable safe delivery. - Demonstrated ownership of growth—proactively seeking feedback from your team, manager, and stakeholders. - Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration with a global engineering team. - Requires either equivalent practical experience or a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. ### Pay & Location - Pay Grade: N - Equity Grade: 9 - Employees new to Affirm typically come in at the start of the pay range. - USA base pay range (CA, WA, NY, NJ, CT): **$195,000–$255,000** per year - USA base pay range (all other U.S. states): **$173,000–$233,000** per year - #LI-Remote ### Remote-first & Benefits - **Remote-first with flexibility built in**: Most roles can be done from almost anywhere within the country of employment; some may occasionally require in-person work.
