Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure
Benchling · San Francisco, CA
About this role
## Software Engineer, Cloud Infrastructure ### About the role Benchling is building an AI platform for biotech R&D—helping teams compress slow, manual workflows into faster, more reliable scientific progress. As part of that mission, we’re hiring a **Software Engineer on Benchling’s Infrastructure team** to design, build, and operate the platforms, services, and tooling that help every engineering team ship and run software **reliably, securely, and cost-effectively**. You’ll work across the foundations of our AWS environment, including: - Compute (Kubernetes/EKS) - Networking - Secrets and identity - Observability - Infrastructure-as-code - Cloud cost economics at scale ### What you’ll do - **Own projects end-to-end**: from initial design and tech plan through prototype, production rollout, and operational handoff. - **Build internal platform tooling**: internal applications, APIs, automation, and developer tools (e.g., CLIs, Slack apps, serverless services, and AI-powered assistants). - **Own parts of our AWS foundation**, including Kubernetes (EKS), networking, secrets/PKI, and security/observability capabilities with clear SLOs, runbooks, and actionable telemetry. - **Advance Terraform at scale**: operate and improve Terraform Cloud release systems, reusable Terraform modules, and policy-as-code guardrails. - **Drive cloud cost governance**: cost visibility, anomaly alerting, cost allocation, and usage trend analysis. - **Contribute to observability tooling** and help evaluate monitoring stack tradeoffs. - **Make architectural decisions** that other teams build on; drive alignment and set standards. - **Operate production systems**: on-call, incident response, blameless postmortems, and root-cause analysis to reduce toil. - **Partner with engineering teams**: understand internal customer needs, mentor through design reviews, and improve tooling and processes. Helpful examples from our engineering blog: - https://benchling.engineering/how-we-run-terraform-at-scale-da7bb75dc394 - https://benchling.engineering/building-an-llm-powered-slackbot-557a6241e993 ### Qualifications - **8+ years** of experience in software engineering, site reliability, platform, or infrastructure engineering - Strong software engineering fundamentals (coding, testing, debugging, API/system design) and proficiency in at least one general-purpose language such as **Python, Go, or TypeScript** - Hands-on **AWS** experience (e.g., EC2, EKS, RDS, VPC, IAM, S3) and understanding of compute/storage/networking/security - Production experience with **infrastructure-as-code**, ideally **Terraform** at meaningful scale - Working knowledge of **Kubernetes** and container-based platforms - Track record delivering complex, ambiguous, multi-month projects (proposal → production), including writing technical design docs and communicating tradeoffs - Experience making architectural decisions and driving alignment across teams - Comfortable working across development and operations; able to diagnose hard production issues and participate in on-call - Clear written communication and strong collaboration ### Nice to have - Cloud cost management (cost allocation, tagging, commitment purchasing, unit economics) - Secrets and **PKI** (e.g., HashiCorp Vault) - AWS networking at scale (e.g., VPC design, Transit Gateway, multi-region connectivity) - Internal developer tooling experience (CLIs, bots, serverless), including **LLM-powered** tools (e.g., Bedrock RAG) - Observability
