DevOps Engineer, Edge and Developer Experience (Remote Eligible in Bulgaria)

## About the Role Smartsheet is seeking a **DevOps Engineer II** to join the **Edge and Developer Experience** team. You’ll help operate Smartsheet’s **high-performance edge proxy platform** and support the adoption of internal engineering tooling. The edge proxy is the entry point for traffic across Smartsheet’s **commercial** and **FedRAMP-authorized US Government** environments. You’ll also contribute to **developer experience** improvements—such as a developer portal (IDP) and standardized **CI/CD pipelines**—to increase engineering velocity across the company. **Location:** Remote from **Bulgaria** --- ## What You’ll Do - **Edge proxy platform:** Assist in maintaining, upgrading, and extending a high-performance reverse proxy (including **Go/Python automation**, container image management on hardened Linux, and CDN/traffic management). - **Infrastructure as Code:** Build and maintain **Terraform/Terragrunt** modules and live configurations for **EKS clusters**, load balancers, **IAM roles**, and supporting AWS services. - **Kubernetes operations:** Support multi-region **EKS** deployments using **GitOps** workflows (e.g., **FluxCD/ArgoCD**) and **Helm** charts. - **CI/CD pipelines:** Design, maintain, and improve shared **GitLab CI/CD** pipeline templates, embedding **DevSecOps** guardrails. - **Automate operational toil:** Build tooling for tasks like **container image patching**, **EKS AMI rotation**, and automated patching cycles. - **Observability:** Help provision and maintain **Datadog SLOs**, monitors, and dashboards; participate in the team’s **on-call** rotation. - **Developer Experience initiatives:** Support rollouts and integrations that reduce cognitive load for engineering teams. - **Apply AI tools:** Use AI-based workflows to improve execution, infrastructure design, and debugging. --- ## What You Have - **2–4 years** of experience in **DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Site Reliability Engineering** - **BS/MS** in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience) - Hands-on experience with **Terraform** for cloud infrastructure - Experience with **Kubernetes operations** and **AWS services** (**EKS, VPC, IAM, ECR**) - Proficiency in at least one general-purpose language—**Go or Python preferred**—for operational automation - Experience designing or maintaining **CI/CD pipelines** (**GitLab CI/CD preferred**) - Familiarity with **container image security** and **GitOps** workflows - Strong operational mindset, including willingness to participate in **on-call** and incident response - Excellent verbal and written communication skills; **English required** - Familiarity with leveraging **AI-based workflows** to author or maintain code/infrastructure - **Legally eligible to work in Bulgaria** on an ongoing basis --- ## Nice to Have - Understanding of **reverse proxies**, **API gateways**, or **load balancers** (e.g., **NGINX, HAProxy**) - Familiarity with **FedRAMP** or **AWS GovCloud** operational constraints - Experience managing **Datadog** resources via infrastructure as code - Experience integrating internal developer portals or feature flag management tools --- ## Equal Opportunity Employer Smartsheet is an Equal Opportunity (EEO) employer committed to fostering an inclusive environment.
